Recoverpoint CDP replica volume causing write cache issues?
Hi there,
I have a customer that is having high Replica volume utilization with Recover point CDP and alongside this the write cache is being hit hard too causing forced flushing. It appears that the high utilization periods on Replica volume correlate to the write cache forced flushing periods.
Currently the Replica volume is running NL-SAS, do you think that changing this to a SAS tier could alleviate some of the issues seen in the write cache?
Thanks in advance,
Ed

Hi Ed,
it's certainly possible, if the NL-SAS drives are busy, it can cause high SP utliziation and forced flushes.
The target LUNs workload is a direct function of the production write workload in IOPS so if the NL-SAS cannot sustain that workload, SAS drives can be a good option.
I would analyze the peak workload periods as usually those are the most impactful ones. Also make sure to check drive and SP utilization to see if the target workload can fit into the new drives with their current load.
Another important thing to note it that if making changes, it's recommended to perform them gradually. In RP, preferbly on a CG copy level. So, if one chooses to move target LUNs for various application, the recommendation would be to perform the change gradaully per CG, analyze results and repeat another cycle of migration if needed.
Hope that helps,
Idan

On VNX, defiantly LUN migration which is completely non-disruptive and transparent to RP.
Make sure to perform those migrations gradually and/or with slower priority in order not to impact RP distribution to the replica volumes.

Thanks for the reply, I have had issues with RLP luns sat on undersized raid groups in the past which can't be migrated so this is refreshingly easy!
