A snippet from the 4.0 Admin Guide, hope this helps.
"A bookmark is a text label that is applied to a snapshot in order to uniquely identify it. Bookmarks can be created manually or automatically at regular intervals.
You can bookmark a snapshot at any time. Bookmarks are useful to mark particular points in time, such as an event in an application, or a point in time you wish to fail over to."
