Move RPAs from one cluster to another cluster

Hi.  We need to shutdown one cluster of 4 RPAs and want to then move those 4 RPAs to another cluster.  This is to support RP with VPLEX.  We are stressing our current VPLEX RP cluster and so need to add resources to it.  I am thinking that this is the process:

1. Remove the no longer needed cluster from the RP group (we have 2 clusters and only need the one).

2. Shutdown via the CLI each of the nodes in the old cluster.

3. For us the VPLEX RP cluster is at another site so will then transport the RPAs to that site.  We will rack and reconnect back to the network (flat network).

4. Log into the active cluster via the CLI and add each RPA in to the cluster.

Do I remove each RPA from the to be removed cluster first, before step #1?

Does this process look correct?  Am I missing something?

Hi there,

So it sounds that you have an RP cluster that’s not in use and you want to repurpose its RPAs to expand an existing RP cluster/system?

Here’s a high-level list of steps:

  • On the old cluster, remove all CGs (or copies if it’s part of an existing RP system), Splitters and then detach RPAs (if this cluster is connected to another cluster in the system, additional work such as disconnecting the cluster from the system must be performed first)

  • Ensure that the RPAs are running the same RP version as the target cluster where you want to add the RPAs, if not download the iso and update the RPAs. You might have to set a new temp IP address that you will use later on when running DM.

  • Perform any needed zoning/masking for the 4 new RPAs (I assume you’re adding equal number of RPAs to each cluster in the RP system)

  • Use Deployment Manager Add RPA wizard to expand the existing cluster(s)

Typically this activity requires EMC Professional Services.
