Manual initialization from CG without using WAN
I´ve been trying to do a initial syncronization of 3 LUNS with Vmware VMs, for 4 weeks now with no success.
Either there are problems at the RPAs or the Link between the sites experience packet loss.
I was wondering if there is any method to make the initial syncronization through a tape or disk backup and then restore it at site B and continue with replication from then on.
Has anyone done this and what is the procedure to follow?
Is there any documentation about this? Ive look all over but cant find anything.
I will greatly appreciate any feedback on this.

Hi,
If you perform a block-level backup/restore to the target volumes, this will seed those target volumes and thus once you enable the CG, the amount of traffic over the WAN to complete the first-time initialization should be low (the production volumes will still be read for change comparisons). You can find this information and process in the RecoverPoint Admin guide (link to the 4.1 version here)
Here is a blurb on it from a backup, if I am reading your question correctly:

I'm unable to comment on the size and/or quality of your WAN link other than stating that it needs to satisfy minimum requirements as per the Release Notes (but be sized correctly for on-going replication vs. RPO) and avoid packet loss greater than 1%. However, in addressing you question re seeding data at Site B, I would direct you to the Initialize from Backup procedure in the RP Admin Guide.

HI echolaughmk
Thank You for your answer. That is exactly what im looking for, but now my question is, how can I make a block backup of LUN in a VNX?
I was checking some Networker functionalities, but I dont see how any option there.

Hi,
Yeah - that would be the item to figure out since the different products out there might have different processes. I'm not familiar if Networker can do it - I think it might have a block-based backup from what I could remember, but could be pulling that out of thin air
. You could do it with a 'dd' dump on unix or some sort of mirroring software, but it would be up to the software of choice to see if they can do it. Not sure if anyone else on the forum has tried it with Networker and maybe they can chime in with any validation on the block-based backup feature.
You might also be able to pose the question to the Networker forum as well in case that helps.
