How to support 3rd storage array for RecoverPoint?
As we known, there are three splitter types:Host-based,Fabric-based and Array-based. Can the 3rd stoarge array support all the three splitter types? If yes, what should the 3rd storage vendor do , need any developement and which version of SR support the 3rd storage array ? Does EMC open the certification program of RP for the 3rd stoarge vendor?
appreciate your input. Thanks.

Hello there,
RP currently supports array based splitters. 3rd party arrays are supported through VPLEX splitter - this means couple of things:
1) Kf VPLEX supports the array and its software version, RP can replicate volumes from that array.
2) Volumes coming from 3rd party arrays must be encapsulated into VPLEX.
Hope that helps,

Hi Idan,
That means the way that RP utilizes 3rd party arrays is only through VPLEX splitter, RP for host-based and fabric-based can't support 3rd party arrays except EMC arrays.
So if customer want to protect the volumes from the 3rd party arrays in a RP scenario, the VPLEX is necessary .
We can confirm which 3rd party arrays can be supported through the simple support Matrix of VPLEX.
That's right?
Looking forword to your reply.

Dwayne

BTW, which version or license of RP should be purchased by customer if they want to protect 3rd party arrays?
Thanks.

That would be RP/EX for VPLEX.

Hi Dwayne,
Note that host and fabric based splitters are no longer supported in RP version 4.0 and onwards.
You are correct in saying that you would need to check supportability of the 3rd party arrays in the VPLEX simple support matrix (ESSM). RP will support replication of any storage VPLEX supports as a BE array.

Hi Idan,
Thank you for your reply. I see, that RP support 3rd party arrays via VPLEX is only for version 4.0 and later, but if our customer still use RP 3.x, can they use directly 3rd party arrays no via VPLEX in RP version 3.x.
I find HP EVA5000,IBM DS8300/8100 in charpter 'RecoverPoint Host Configurations' of EMC support matrix RecoverPoint 3.x March 2014, I think it means that RP can support 3rd party arrays directly, right?
Looking forword for your reply.

Dwayne,
RP 3.5.x will reach end of primary support (EOPS) on 5/31/15.
Therefore, I would recommend to prepare for an upgrade to the target release which is 4.0.2.2 (4.0 SP2 P2).
BTW, RecoverPoint 3.5.x supports VPLEX splitter on VPLEX running GeoSynchrony 5.1.
That being said, MY recommendation would be to upgrade to RP 4.0.2.2 and then use VPLEX in it's target version to replicate volumes from the 3rd party arrays.

Idan
