Can I use vRPA to replicate XIO luns?

Hello Experts,

I am bit confused with vRPA setup, I understand that this is designed for VM protection.

My question is can  I deploy vRPA on a VM platform and use it to perform replication of XIO LUNs. I know that from physical RPA's we can perform storage based replication using recoverpoint, but can the same storage based replication will happen using vRPA.

If not, does that mean only LUNs which are assigned to ESXi are the only candidates for being protected using vRPA technology.

I appreciate your support and time to help me understand my query.

Cheers!!!

Hi,

You cannot use the vRPA on XtremIO LUNs as Rich had mentioned above since it is only supported on VNX, VNXe, and UNITY. You will need physical RPA's to replication XtremIO LUNs today.

For the vRPA guide - if you have access to support.emc.com, there are a few docs that will provide some additional info:

- RecoverPoint iSCSI Troubleshooting Guide

- RecoverPoint vRPA Technical Notes

Also - the Admin, Install, and other general guides will have information about vRPA's in them as well.

Hope that helps.

Hi Ivan,

The vRPA is used by both traditional RP and RP4VMs. With traditional RP, replication is performed at the LUN or datastore level to be more specific in relation to your question and the vRPA itself is only supported with the VNX, VNXe and Unity arrays, whereas RP4VMs replicates at a VM level and is agnostic to the underlying storage used to provision the datastores.

Hello Rich,

So now I understand a clear difference between VRPA and RPA4VM, and I am now more focused on the vRPA part.

So the vRPA is not a physical appliance and is deployed on the VM Platform. Does that mean that I can use the vRPA to perform storage level lun replication specifically on XIO. I am only concerned on  XIO and its Luns getting replicated to our DR site.

Also, do you have a guide or some supporting doc on vRPA for me to understand better, as with the google search things are all garbled and most of the stuff that is coming up is for RPA4VM which is making me confused. We dont want to replicate the VM datastores or RDM, we just want to replicated our XIO LUNs.

Looking forward for hearing from you.
