Ventilation too high after new NIC card

Hi,

I purchased the PowerEdge R540 three weeks ago and the fans was at 25% of PWM. Today I installed a 10G network card (10GTek X520-DA1) but now the fans are at 40% of PWM. There is no problem in the server and the temperature is the same (26 degrees).

I know that I can change the PWM manually, but can I do something else before. The server was upgraded and I installed ESXi 7.0 Update 2 Build-17867351 (A03).

Thanks.

Fan speed will increase when new component installed on the server to provide sufficient cooling for the new component installed. Is the new card you installed on the server is bought from Dell? Can you share the part# of the card? Some time we seen this type of behavior when non supported card is installed on the server.

Which PCIe slot you installed the card. You can refer below link for type of cards supported in various slot

Hi,

- I installed the card in the slot 2 (Full height right riser).

- In the iDRAC (Network peripheral), there is a ? for the condition of the card. If I click on the card, I see: Intel(R) 82599 10 Gigabit Network Connection for the product name.

- No it's not a card bought from Dell. It's from 10GTek model X520-10G-1S-X8

Thanks for your support.

I tried to manually change the speed of the fans but I can't:

ipmitool -I lanplus -H 192.168.x.x -U root -P xxxxxxx raw 0x30 0x30 0x01 0x00

or

ipmitool -I lanplus -H 192.168.x.x -U root -P xxxxxxx raw 0x30 0x30 0x02 0xff 0x19

Unable to send RAW command (channel=0x0 netfn=0x30 lun=0x0 cmd=0x30 rsp=0xd4): Insufficient privilege level

The version of the iDRAC is 5.00.00.00

It's normal that I can do that with root?

Thanks
