Using multiple RAID controllers in a PowerEdge R730xd

I have a PowerEdge R730xd with a PERC H730 Mini controller and want to know if I could add another H730 Mini. I'm wanting to provide room for an additional 7 drives and need to know if the chassis/mainboard can house both controllers.

The cable plugs into the Expander and it takes care of the rest. That is how you get 24 drives.

I will note that field changing of backplane configuration is not supported. It is selected at time of purchase.

From what I can tell if you install a drive in slot 8 it should show up  (drive slots begin numbering at 0).

Hi, If the original system has an empty slot, you could try plugging in the HD. If you could send us the service tag, we could take a look for you. Have a good one.

Is there any way to extend the physical drive capacity of the server beyond 8 using a new or existing RAID controller?

Hello BDT8493,

The R730XD has only one socked for the mini controller.

You can use only one PERC mini in the system.

Hello BDT8493,

Is the service tag you provided correct?

It shows to be Chassis with up to 24, 2.5" Hard Drives

Pn#PGP6R - Backplane        ASSY,CRD,BKPLN,24X2.5,R730XD

Are there just drive blanks in the other slots?

You may add external storage:

External controller: PERC H830

Storage unit: MD1400, MD1420

Yes, the other 16 slots are empty. Can you think of a way to use them in a RAID configuration that doesn't require an external unit?

Hello BDT8493,

You should be able to get a hard drive with a carrier, remove the drive blank and insert the new drive.

Sales can quote you a customer kit that included the drive and the carrier.

I understand. It's just that the RAID controller we have says it supports 8 physical drives.

We're using SAS drives so the 2x4 Internal SAS connectors part is what worries me.
