Service Tag for used R420 doesn't exist; suspicious or not?

I was shopping for a used rack server online and found an R420 at an attractive price. The seller has listed the Service Tag. I wanted to look up the configuration (or at least what it was when it left the factory) but when I try to look up the service tag, the warranty checker says the service tag doesn't exist.

Is this suspicious at all? Or is it normal for some servers to not be in Dell's system?

As a Dell Partner....

  • it can be a demo unit...where the distributor never activate the unit
  • yes we have seen it more than once that Dell have "forget" to enable the Stag. Server and Switches in our case
  • Keep in mind that the STAG can be override or be empty. Think about when a technican replace the systemboard

So yes it is possible that you dont find a STAG on the dell public site.

Thanks for the info. Just want to make sure I’m not buying a counterfeit or ‘hot’ server.
