SAS HDD not detected on Poweredge r740
I have four SAS HDDs inserted into my Dell Poweredge R740 server. All 4 drives got power but when I went to install OS (ubuntu 22.04) it does not detect any drive. Also while I was running the troubleshooter, it could not find any drive as well. Also while I was looking for physical drive properties, none of the 4 HDD drives were detected.
Please note that, after powering up my server, only one of the 2 HDD indicator lights turned on the other remained off (see attached photo)
Thanks a lot

What storage controller and backplane did you have on the server? Is it a PERC controller for S140 Software RAID controller. If it is a S140 controller then only SATA drives are supported.
Can you check the physical disk status in iDRAC
As the status LED is off, it is mostly drive not detected. You can refer below link for drive LED status

Thanks for the details. As per the screen shot looks like you have only SWRAID controller and S140 only supported SATA drives (HDD or SSD). You can refer below link for details

Hi @doer,
In addition to what Shine K has said, please refer to the attached document for supported controllers on Dell PE R740 https://dell.to/3WYpFdo.
And here is the S140 user guide https://dell.to/3GlwIWI, which confirms only SATA HDD/ SSD's are supported.

Hello @DELL-Shine K, @Dell-Dheeraj thanks a lot, could you please tell me how can I check which storage controller and backplane am I using? Just wondering if I select AHCI mode, will this problem still persist?

One way to check is boot to BIOS and check under Device Settings page and see what controllers are mentioned their. You can also check the controller details from iDRAC GUI

Hello @DELL-Shine K, When I select RAID on BIOS, I found S140 controller (figure 1). However, no controller is detected for AHCI mode (figure 2)

@DELL-Shine K is there any way that I can use the same controller (s140) with the SAS drives? Maybe using any converter? Or do I have to buy another controller that supports SAS drive? If so, which controllers should I buy for my 14G Dell PE r740 to support the SAS drives?

You can refer below link for list of storage controller supported in PowerEdge R740
https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/poweredge-r740/per740_techspecs_pub/storage-controller-specifications?guid=guid-cab093cc-70ba-4037-a013-e410965f75a2&lang=en-us
Below controllers support SAS drives
PowerEdge RAID Controller (PERC) H330, PERC H730P, PERC H740P, HBA330, H750 (adapter only) , H350 and HBA350i (adapter only). Among this HBA330 and HBA350i does not support virtual disk.
The controller support depends on the chassis also. Can you share your chassis details like backplane and number of slots available in backplane
