R740xd HDD Firmware update issue

Good afternoon all,

We are having difficulty getting the EK05 firmware revision for the Toshiba MG08SDA400NY installed on a PE R740xd. We actually have 6 of these servers arranged in a HCI cluster using StorageSpaces Direct.

After placing all drives in any of the nodes into maintenance mode and running the update package, we receive "The operation failed due to the occurrence of an unspecified error. Run diagnostics to verify configuration and try again".

Upon investigating the package itself, it would appear as though the 'Payload' folder within is empty after extracting its contents. Having looked at other firmware packages for other drives, this folder seems to contain the actual firmware binary itself, however in the case of the EK05 package, this is not present.

Has anyone else attempted to install this particular package?

Thanks

Matt

Matthew Hibbard,

Would you verify if any of the following apply?

The update EK05 update will not run if any of the following conditions exist
1. Any Virtual Disk that is not optimal.
2. A RAID container that is performing a Background Initialization or Consistency Check.
3. A Rebuild, Resync, or copyback function is taking place.
4. A RAID set that is Partially Degraded or in a Degraded state.

This update will run on drives remaining in a RAID set that is in a Offline state.

There is an architectural constraint with Dell DUP HDD firmware update utility, related to system memory utilization, which is typically encountered on systems with minimal system memory, memory-intensive configurations, multiple RAID controllers, or memory-intensive applications. This issue is typically reported as - The operation was not successful because the device buffer write has failed. And will result in an aborted attempt to update firmware on the identified HDD. Error codes associated with this failure mode include 8009 and 8017. Once an error is detected, the update session is aborted. There is no data integrity or data availability risk associated with this issue. Subsequent attempts to update the HDD firmware may succeed, particularly if system resources are freed up

Let me know.

Hi Chris,

I'm afraid the issue is not related to any of the above. There is no RAID controller in use for a start, as this is a StorageSpaces Direct configuration. The drives are all connected to a HBA350i.

There are also no issues with memory. Needless to say, the hosts are in maintenance mode when we attempt the firmware update, so they are evacuated of all VMs. These machines have 384GB installed and are not constrained in any way.

The core issue appears to be related to the actual package itself which has no payload in it. You can see this if you download and extract its contents to a folder.

Kind Regards

Matt

Matthew Hibberd,

Sorry about that, I have researched this and we are indeed looking into the 56PYN firmware, and that a possible replacement fw update could be released.

I will let you know if I see anything else.

I am not certain on the timeframe for the replacement, as it is just being discovered. Normally it isn't too long, but I can't attest to anything specific.

Ok Chris, thanks for letting me know,

Do you have an eta for when this will be resolved?

The only reason why I ask is that we are due to be moving this infrastructure to a new datacentre during early May and wanted to get the issues that this specific firmware update addresses patched prior to shutting everything down.

Kind Regards

Matt

Hello, when I look at the "Toshiba EK05 for MG08 Air SAS 4TB program for model number(s) MG08SDA400NY" for the R740XD, I see an update released on April 27. I am not sure if this is the new version that has been fixed, if your firmware release date is older, it may be the new version. https://dell.to/3y6io1Q

Hi Erman.

Ok this is looking a lot better.

If I extract the contents of the package, the 'payload' folder now has a 1.2MB file in it named 'EK05.FWH'.

Previously, this folder was empty.

We'll attempt to install the package during the next available maintenance window.

Kind Regards

Matt
