R730xd disks missing in controller

Hi there,

I've got an R730xd with 14 x 4TB HDDs and a PERC H730P Mini

"omreport storage enclosure" describes the enclosure Backplane Status as "Critical" and the State as "Failed". In addition, the raid 60 virtual disk Status is "Critical" and the State "Failed".
The disk controller displays only 7 disks in the physical disks section from 14. It reports 5 "missing" in the raid 60 virtual disk.

We removed the disks and placed them in a similar R720xd with a PERC H710p mini. The 5 disks are still missing wheras new similar disks added are visible. Is it possible when the backplane failed it damaged the 5 disks?

Both servers, and possibly the disks, require system firmware upgrades.

Thanks

Hello QngLaqsaW8VEQKAq,

The backplane is probably reporting critical because of the failed virtual disk.

Have you seen a notice of a Foreign Config that you can import?

I would recommend updating the storage chain firmware (controller, backplane, hard drive) and iDRAC  and BIOS. Check results.

Then with all the drives installed, export Support Assist Collection and RAID Controller Log through PowerEdge Lifecycle Controller. Save it to a thumb drive.

Upload the report here under the R730xd service tag and Private Message me the service tag.

Hello Nick,

I received your private message. Thank you.

I did look over the report and posted to see if you could try update the Backplane and drive firmware.

Were you able to apply either?

You may have done this already:  Test do any other hard drive get recognized in slots 1, 2, 5, 10 or 11?

Controller log only goes back to 04/01/22

12 disk in raid60, Only 7 are recognized.

1, 2, 5, 10, 11 are missing reporting phy bad for slot

Hopefully we can clear the phy bad by booting with all the raid60 drives removed.

If you tested other drives and they are recognize in these slots then these troubleshooting steps won't be needed because we will know the slots are good.

Action plan:

Shut down, drain flea power,

pull all the raid60 drives, check for any pin damage on slots at backplane, ensure backplane cables are seated good.

Make sure bottom of backplane is seated in chassis correctly and does not get bowed out

Boot without raid 60 drives then shut down and insert the drives , check results

If you have verified other drives can be recognized in those slots and that the issue follows the drives to another server we can conclude the drives are failed.

If you need the data and do not have a backup you may consider a Data Recovery company.
