R730 Noise when additional cards are plugged in.

As above. Ive just bought a second hand one for home use and its way noisier than my r720.

My question is when i plug in a couple of expansion cards ( an old pcie OCZ 512gb SSD and, or a pcie usb 3.1 card) the fans on the server while dont max out but do elevate quite a lot when they are in. There are no errors on screen - server boots fine. Is there a reason for this? my r720 with a full suite of 3.5" drives and the 2 same cards inserted is quiet as a mouse compared to it.

Cheers

It is expected to have increase in fan speed when additional cards are installed on the server. Is the new cards installed are supported on the server and from Dell? If these are non Dell cards then fan increase could be much higher.

Definately not on Dells list but it seems very unusual to ramp up speed for no reason on this particular model ( as i say my r720 is near silent with the same cards in )

In fact on the subject of "authorized cards" i have a stock Nvidia p2000 (primary job for this server is for runing plex) - will that be classed as a non standard card??

When you say not supported do you mean itll go in, work but just run the fans harder?

Having said that ive found a way round it by replacing the 6 oem fans with Noctua silent fans. Ran it all last night albeit in a relatively empty config 1xssd and 1x3.5 2TB Temps are well within limits - the noctua's are pwm controlled the same way as the oem fans and didnt push past 1600rpm - its not loaded up yet (still testing) but i am enjoying the silence....

There could be multiple issues with unsupported card and fans running harder is one among them. There could be issues with system/OS detecting the card, Booting issues, driver installation etc.

Yes, i appreciate that. Its just being used at home primarily as a plex server (hence the p2000) for the video processing offload and some Vm stuff as well. The R720 i have is a ProxMox server and again while ive not had to mess with the fans on that ive taken some additional SATA feeds from the main loom at the front of the server (as there is a spare sata port at the back of the motherboard) so i can run a boot drive from that. Anyway...assuming it stays cool i think ive sorted my problem out. many thanks for your comments also.

Just to say that the P2000 is working fine and the server is staying cool with the new noctua's

@Comfy What noctua's did you use to replace the Dell fans on the 730? Im running a docker that's using an ipmi fan controller to set the fan speed to static value to avoid the fans running at 100% coz someone at dell decided that no one should plug pcie cards that they don't like and use nvme drives etc.

Hi - not sure of the exact model of Noctua - same size dimensions so they fit in the fan space but half the depth. Cut the plugs off of the fan housing and then solder them to the noctua wiring. As for heat ive not had an issue. In mine ive got...

2x old pcie 500gb storage cards

1x P2000 Quadro card

1x 4 port usb card

2x CPU's

198gb of memory

No heat issues atall and a fraction of the noise!

Not sure Dell would approve but, its been faultless for the last few years with no issues atall.

@Comfy Thank you. The measurements on the fans are 1.5" x 2.25" x 2.25" not sure what the compatibility is on the Noctua side. Looking forward to a quite blissful life post-upgrade lol

Are you running the new fans at 100% or are you using a fan controller via ipmi as well?

They do the measurements in mm normally these are i think 60mm without measuring them...

As for control...ive left them as is....the motherboard sees the ceiling height of the noctua's and controls them accordingly.. ie max is 3k

Hello, I see an ongoing conversation on DIY modifications here. I can't and won't be part of that as it is definitely out of scope however just to point out the noise is expected and working as designed-3rd party cards cannot be recognized by iDRAC hence it will go full speed to provide enough cooling. I found some read for you.
