R640 iDRAC9 PM1725a U.2 NVMe SSD firmware update failing

Hi,

I've been struggling for the past few days trying to get a bunch of Dell Enterprise PM1725a 1.6TB U.2 firmware updated from 1.0.4 to 1.2.1. The update appears as a needed update in iDRAC 9, but when the server reboots and goes into the Lifecycle controller to update the firmware it fails after 20 seconds. Log comes up with a strange message that the drive is not present or locked, or the update isn't needed. Any ideas?

Server is R640, 10 bay, NVMe cables from backplane to board, 4 drives per server in bays 6,7,8,9, iDRAC sees all the drives, (although they're reported as 2.5GT/s and PCIe x1 negotiated speeds) which is another question I have as to why that is.

Thanks!

Exact error text: SUP0517 Unable to update the Dell Express Flash NVMe 1.6TB 2.5 SFF U.2 (PM1725a) firmware to version 1.2.1 because the operation is not supported or the device is in a locked state or the device is not present in the target system.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.
Could we try updating in the OS, instead of Idrac?

@DELL-Young E Thanks for the reply. The OS is ESXi 7 U3, but I'll add a SATA SSD and install Windows Server 2016 on it if you think that will help get these drives updated. Is that a good plan?

Support Live Image is available for download at:

How about we boot on the live image and process the files for Linux OS?

What is support live image?

Support Live Image (SLI) is a CentOS ISO image that packages a collection of utilities and diagnostic tools.”

@DELL-Young E Thank you, trying it this weekend during a maintenance window. Will report back on the results.
