R640 diskless
Hi all,
We want to reuse a R640 for lab purposes but is a strange version without backplane and disks. Could we install a backplane on it and connect drives?. I see the board is like other R640 servers with SATA connectors and MINI slot. iDRAC don't report any warning or failure regarding backplane connection so I suspect it has an special firmware or something like this.
Could someone confirm what storage options we have with this type of CTO.
Regards,

jtejada.ralco,
From my understanding I don't believe there was a non backplaned cabled drive version of the R640, so I am not certain the model you mean. If you like you can private message me the svc tag for the server and I can clarify what was shipped with the server.
Let me know.

Hi Chris
There is no difference between a disk version of a R640 and a diskless version, you can remove a backplane from any server and aslong as all the associated cables are removed then no errors will be created.
If you wish to add a backplane into this server you will require the backplane, backplane power cable, backplane signal cable and depending on io connectivity you will either require the backplane to sata cables or the backplane to sas cables along with a raid controller. There are a couple of different backplanes also and you will need to purchase the correct one for your server, 4 x 3.5", 8 x 2.5" and 10 x 2.5"
Hope this helps
Dave
