R330 Firmware Update Fail for Intel X710 NIC/Card

Hi,

I'm in the process of building a new pfSense box on a refurbished Dell R330 (local ISP is now offering up to 8 Gigabit residential).  I picked up an Intel X710 dual port 10G network card and installed it into the server without issue.

iDRAC detects a newer firmware for Intel(R) Ethernet Converged Network Adapter X710 and downloads Network_Firmware_DK4G2_WN64_20.0.17_A00.EXE, however the update persistently fails with:

RED097: Unable to complete the firmware update operation because the specified firmware image is for a component that is not in the target system inventory.

The card is Intel branded (not Dell), and the OS on the box is FreeBSD.  The current firmware for the card shows as blank in iDRAC, but the card itself is visible (and is visible in LifeCycle Controller).

I'm pretty new to homelabbing so any advice is very much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi, as Shine said there's not much we can help with when there's a 3rd party part component involved, I'm afraid.

As Intel card is not from Dell, there is a high chance that update will not work as update need Dell FW to be available on the card. Can you check whether FW Inventory on iDRAC showing this card and current FW version?

Hi Young,

Understand, was hoping someone may have had experience with how to install non-Dell firmware as Im new to Dell servers.

Thanks

Hi Shine,

I understand, was just hoping someone may have run into this before (given I understand the card is quite common).  iDRAC and LifeCycle Controller both detect the card and it shows in system inventory, but the firmware field is blank.

Is there a way to install firmware from a command line or non-Dell UI somewhere?

Thanks

Andy
