R320 crashes with 3x32GB ESXi at vmx_ahci

Hi there,

I have a R320 (fully up to date) with 3x32GB quad rank mem, which chrashes as soon as ESXi reached vmx_ahci. If I remove a DIMM, or exchange it for 6x8GB, it's fine. What is causing the machine to crash with 96GB?

Hello,

For the errors that appeared, could you do a NVRAM clear and check that in the BIOS if in the power management, system profile is set to "performance optimized".

Hi,

Could you check if the memory population is correct according to the manual https://dell.to/3e6qhbp

Can you also check what is the 8GB and 32GB memory properties, if they are RDIMM or UDIMM?

Are you referring to vmw_ahci or vmx_ahci? Though, if the crash happens at that point, does seems to be the ahci driver. Have you tried just 2*32GB?

Hi Joey,

I found out there is much more wrong with the machine. It is working with 3x32GB and 3x8GB at this moment but now and then it reboots with CPU voltage out of range. It did that before as well, no matter how much mem is in there.

CPU 1 MEM VTT PG voltage is outside of range.
CPU 1 MEM VDDQ PG voltage is outside of range.

Hi Joey,

I did the NVRAM clear, and I've put 6x8GB in the machine. It works fine at the moment. The question is, for how long. I'll keep you informed.

I've also set it to performance, but it uses much more power now. Could you explain to me why this setting could be of use in this case?

Thanks.

Hi,

I might be sure of the engineering architecture on the power consumption, but if the issue goes away with the power settings at performance level, then to me it make sense the server need to draws more power if they in high specifications.

Dear Joey,

The server is working flawlessly for 2 weeks now. I think the performance settings did the trick.

Thanks again.
