R310, R810 idrac6 initial attempts at activating
I’ve bought a r310 and an r810. The r310 didn’t come with idrac on the service tag, the r810 did. I tried activating idrac6 after buying the cards hoping it was just a hardware thing. As you can see by now, I’m a total nube doing all this for educational purposes so I can get a marketable skill.
I found a video on you tube titled; “Dell idrac initial startup”. I followed it as close as I can guess, there’s no sound so some of the steps I’m not sure why he’s taking. If you need something to be on disable and it’s already on disable do you need to change it only to change it back?
In any event I got to idrac6 configuration utility and it was named “root” and entered the code, calvin and re-entered it below, calvin. Then nothing. Do I hit enter? It’s just stuck there.
same exact thing on the r810. I’ve restarted the servers, I just don’t know what I’m missing. In the video a window pops up that says, “save changes and exit”. In my case it’s stuck blinking after the last code letter.
please help.

By the way, neither of these servers have an OS. I read that the idrac should be activated first. Is that correct? Thanks in advance

Hi,
That's great to have for practice. For 11G servers, some models need iDRAC 6 express card and iDRAC 6 enterprise card to work. Can you confirm you have installed both for R310. Can you provide me the card DPN# that you have purchased.
Can you share the video that you referred, I would need to confirm it is correct to follow. I'm unsure which you are referring to be disable. Probably best you can show us in video form or some screenshots.
In iDRAC6 configuration utility, the section that you refer to enter root and password is to setup the user account for remote access. You can use the user account via the iDRAC IP address in your system browser.

The video I watched on you tube is this: Dell iDRAC setup (Step by step) by FKIT It is the 3:23 minute version. I'll work on those part numbers now...

In the R310 I installed idrac access card cn-0j675t-75435-36e-01dw-a00. The enterprize card is pn: 0y383m cn-0y383m-13740-15j-024i-a12.
Details on the R810 to follow.

In the R810 the idrac access card number is: cn-0j675t-13740-23m-02du-a00. The enterprize card number is: dp/n 0jfdj9 cn-0jfdj9-74751-16t-0223-a05.
Thanks in advance for your insight and help.

In the video I get to the time stamp of; 2:25 when things quit working for me. In the video at ; 2:31 a window pops up and lets you click on "save changes and exit". That window never appears on my screen. It just stops where I have to enter and confirm the code and it just blinks there on both machines.

In the R310 in particular, without the Express card the server fans run at highspeed and very loud. Once the express card is installed it slows down. I dont know if that means anything.

Hello, the noise is high, and it is expected. No iDRAC means fans will go 100%.

Hello, it is a very basic setup.
iDRAC p/n is correct for R310.
The video, the time frame you are referring related to the admin password change, I'd ask that you make sure that the passwords do match.

Im admittedly very new to this you can assume I could have looked over the very basic things, I dont see that as disrespectful in any way.
Following along the video, the code word I entered was "calvin". Then of course I confirmed the same code and the screen just sits there blinking at me. Since it only shows stars for the code I tried several times to make sure I somehow made a mistake on either attempt.
Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Hello,
calvin is default password.
Default user: root
Default password: calvin
Are those the ones you are using?
I don't see a link for the video. Could you post that?
Can you do these steps to reset iDRAC to defaults:
Boot into the CTRL+E iDRAC BIOS
Reset Default Settings
Press ESC, Save Changes, and reboot
Boot into the CTRL+E iDRAC BIOS again
Verify LAN parameters and IPMI over LAN are ENABLED
Press ESC, Save Changes, and reboot

As an update I'd like to say everything is up and running with the R310 and R810. Basically I removed everything I added to only what it needed to work. I shut both down for the night and went at it with a clear mind. Through a lot of reading online I learned enough to get it running.
Stuff like, when installing Windows Server Evaluation make sure you click on, "desk top experience" for the evaluation software to download. Lots and lots of little things.
