R250 upgradability

Hi,

Just got my hands on a new, unused entry level R250 for 270$

Since the price was good, I did not have time to check the upgradability of the system and I can't find much online about the things I wish to upgrade

So here is my questions:

1:

Can a 2 bay cabled system be upgraded to a hot plug backplane?

2:

If hot plug backplane upgrade is not supported, is there a partnumber for non hot plug drive trays and 4x SAS/SATA cables?

3:

I see in the technical guide that the PCIe slots only support maximum 25w PCIe cards. Can the system support more than 25w cards with the 700W PSU, or is this a limitation of the motherboard?

Thanks in advance :)

Best regards

Glenn

Hi,

Can a 2 bay cabled system be upgraded to a hot plug backplane?

I don't think you can, you may need to replace the drive tray chassis, which there isn't any DPN# that is listed for me to provide. Hence, you will need to purchase a different R250 chassis and move the components.

If hot plug backplane upgrade is not supported, is there a partnumber for non hot plug drive trays and 4x SAS/SATA cables?

I read that you have a 2 drive configuration, so I assume you have the drives connected to the main board? If yes, the system only supports SATA configuration as the RAID controller is S150. Page 17: https://dell.to/3Szeyc1. DPN# 83HNW

I see in the technical guide that the PCIe slots only support maximum 25w PCIe cards. Can the system support more than 25w cards with the 700W PSU, or is this a limitation of the motherboard?

The mainboard can only support up to 25W PCIe cards. Reference: https://dell.to/4761Zta

Thank you :)

Not having hot swap is not the end of the world, have never needed the feature on my old server.

Is there a part number for the drive trays aslo? I'm hoping to add two more drives to the system

Best regards

@DELL-Marco B

Hallo again,

spent some time trying to source the disk carriers with no luck. Not even my local Dell supplier. I have also tried to find some second hand disk with carriers, but all I can find is disk only, or disk with hot swap carrier.

If you know where or how I can buy two carriers I would be extreamly thankfull.

Have 4x 16tb ultrastar sas disk I want to use in this chassis. Have the H750, cable and drives. Just the two extra carriers missing

Hello,

The part number Marco provided #GNFM2 is a Service Part Number.

These part numbers do not generally come up on the website.

You need to call in to Sales and ask for the Spare Part Department to get a quote and purchase #GNFM2   Service Part Number.

Be sure to ask for the screws too.

Thanks for your reply. Is there any other way I can contact Dell in Norway? Tried to call for over 2 hrs. but no answer. As you can imagine, I don't have time for that during a workday.

Hi, you can check contact deatials from here Kontakt oss og Dell chat | Dell NO If you cannot reach sales team directly I would try to reach support team and asked an alternative method. I also share this partner website for you PartnerSearch (https://dell.to/48tdlXW)

Hope that helps!

OK. So Dell Norway is absent, and doesn't seem to even exist. None of the partners i have contacted can (or bother) order parts. If I call the norwegian Dell number no one i answering. Out of ideas, maybe just go for a new system, but that won't be from Dell. Why disktrays can't be sold over the counter in the webshop is something I can't understand. Listend to the Dell waiting music so many times over that my brain has turned in to gravy

Hello,

You may have this already, but if not try this page to find contact:

I can't say what went in to the decision to only sell carriers with purchase of drive but that been the way for at least thirteen years since I have worked for Dell.

The thing is that if I call and go trough the menu, there is no answer on the spare parts line. If I select support, it's usually someone in India answering that won't help me because I don't have premium support plan. Yesterday I ventilated my frustation at support, and finally a note was sent to someone that probably can help me with spare parts. Got a call from a guy in Denmark today, and he said he was going to check if the drive trays is availble as spare part. So I'm hopefull, but not holding my breath since he had to check first
