R250 Raid S150

I have purchase 3 R250 servers. They don’t have an option for anything other than S150 raid. I am wanting to use RAID 1 for Hyper Vboot and RAID 1 for VMs. Am I at risk using the S150 raid? If so can I upgrade to H330 RAID?

Apart from H345 and H755, R250 also support H355. If you are changing from S150 to H-Series controller you also need to have separate cables also based on what backplane you have on the server. You can refer below link for more details on this

H330 is not supported in this server, but the H345 and H755 are.

Don't use the S-series controllers - they are garbage. Use the H-series or Windows Disk Management mirroring instead.

I configured the servers with 3.5" Chassis with up to x4 Hot Plug Hard Drives Software RAID w/Backplane.

The servers are coming with a single 2TB drive with Hyper V preinstalled. I want to add two or possibly three Kingston DC500M 960G drives in RAID1 or RAID5. I plan to replicate three hosts. This depends upon whether I need to mirror the Hyper V drive. My gut tells me it isn't necessary and a waste of a drive. Only 4 are available in these machines. What is your opinion?

I don't plan to boot to RAID. I will boot to the 2TB SATA with hypervisor.

I want to use RAID 1 for the VMs. The VMs will be both replicated and backed up.

What specifically is wrong with the S150? I have read some people say "software RAID is garbage". But I have yet to find an explanation. I need to justify to my supervisor why I need to spend an additional $500 dollars on a $1,700 dollar server.

Also, when you say H330 is not supported, does that mean it absolutely won't work?

I picked up (3) H345. They should be here later this week or early next. The R250s are in production as of this morning. They are being built with 3.5" Chassis with up to x4 Hot Plug Hard Drives Software RAID w/Backplane. There will be one 2tb SATA Hot plug hard drive installed. I will be installing one more 2TB SATA Hot plug and (2) Kingston SSD Hot plug drives. I looked at the link you sent me. But I am not sure what I need to order for cabling. Can you point me in the right direction?

You need to have below cable to connect x4 backplane to PERC controller

Now I am confused about the controller. I am looking at the manual below. And I see two H345s. Which will work? Do I need both?

Ok. I purchased the wrong controller.

Since the part numbers above are the same, does that mean that the controller comes with the cables?

Hello hendranata,

If you have the R250 with cabled hard drives you would need one of these cables to use the S150

Drives - cable

3.5"x2 - #7D63G - ASSY,CBL,SATA,HDD,X2,MB,R250

3.5"x4 - #83HNW - ASSY,CBL,SATA,HDD,X4,MB,R250

The cable will changes based on backplane. You can refer below link with supported configurations and point out which figure represent your configuration

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/poweredge-r250/per250_ism_pub/cable-routing?guid=guid-67e51337-c140-44f4-8191-eefc3cbfe8a5&lang=en-us

If you have 4X3.5 backplane you need below cable

61F98 - ASSY,CBL,SAS,PERC,X4BP,R2/R350

If you have 4X3.5 cabled drives you need below cable

38NC4 - ASSY,CBL,SAS,PERC,HDD,X4,R250

If you have 2X3.5 cabled drives you need below cable

JY1GC - ASSY,CBL,SAS,PERC,HDD,X2,R250
