R240 Setup Questions

Hello! New to the community here! Just bought a used R240 from a place I knew the IT guy. Came with some used drives. It’s the cabled version with no backplane etc, pretty plain Server but am going to use it in my home lab setup.

I’m currently facing 2 issues. For starters, the used drives he provided me do not show up in the bios inventory nor in the life cycle controller. It’s a 4 slot system and I have 2 of them in. Any suggestions? I have a hard time believing the drives are bad, but I have a feeling I’m overlooking something.

Secondly, I bought a HBA330 raid controller for it and am needing to know what SAS cable I should use. I have it plugged into one of the riser card pcie slots but need to get it connected cable wise.

Appreciate the time and help! Thanks!

Hi @SkiWhiz70,

Welcome to the community.

Can you identify how is the cabling looks like when you first got the server, before installing HBA330. Would that be Figure 4? https://dell.to/3ZJZmcH

Lifecycle controller should be able to show the detected drive, unless faulty cable or drives. Try checking the cabling if it's loose. R240 have S140 RAID controller, check if you're able to access to the RAID BIOS via F11. If initially you have an issue with the server, do contact the seller to check if the server originally working, if possible have them diagnose.

The SAS cable to use is 2KN4G for your HBA330 to connect to the drives, assuming you're referring to that. Do also check for slot priority for HBA330 here: https://dell.to/3ZLSATO

Thank you for the response! Apologies in a delay- have had some family things come up lately and haven’t circled back to this problem yet.

Yes figure 4 is correct. The seller stated it was working properly prior to the sale and they had 4 6TB drives installed. I currently only have 2 6 TB drives installed.

I appreciate your feedback and resources as well! I’ll update this tomorrow after I troubleshoot some more. Thanks!

Hi @SkiWhiz70,

Alrighty. If the server was working with 4 drive and was sold to you with 2, maybe the cables got loosen when they removed the drives. Try checking that.

Let us know if the RAID controller is able to detect the drives.
