PowerEdge R730 doesn't boot

Hi all,

I have a PowerEdge R730 server that doesn't boot anymore (system is from 2015). In fact, it doesn't do anything (no video output, no beep signals or something like that) after powering off and back on again. It was running Windows Server and has been up for over 18 months running fine with no issues.

Now I installed OS patches and wanted to execute the required reboot, but the system doesn't come up again. Harddrives seem fine (all LEDs are green). It doesn't show it's Service Tag on the little display besides the power switch, so my assumption is, that some kind of on board battery could be empty or something like that.

Any idea what I can could? Would be really important as I have some virtual machines running on this host that are really important. Any help would be highly appreciated! Are there any DELL support services I could buy and have a technician come by and help us getting this thing up again?

Thanks in advance!

If you have access to iDRAC can you check logs (LifeCycle logs and POST logs) in iDRAC to see whether it have any useful information. You can also check virtual console on iDRAC. You can try to boot the server after performing AC power Cycle (Remove the power cable wait for 1 minute and connect it back)

You can also try to boot the server with Minimum to POST configuration. Minimum to POST configuration is the configuration that has the minimum components required to complete POST. Typically, the minimum to POST configuration is PSU1, CPU1, memory module in A1 slot, and the default riser without expansion cards.

Hi DELL-Shine K,

thanks for your suggestions! In effect, power cycling the server through removing the power cables was the solution. Didn't think of that in the first place. Very relieved now and will definitely take a deeper look into iDRAC and backup (and restore strategy...

Thank you, Frank
