Poweredge R640 RAID issue

Hi all,

I have a dell poweredge r640 with Windows server 2019 installed.
On this server I have a 3x Disks in RAID 5 for OS, working flawless.

However when adding 4 new 2.4TB disks in a new RAID 5 for data,  i have BSOD with the error "SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED".

After that try, i removed the virtual disk and convert the disks to non-RAID just for testing purpuse, but i have the same BSOD.

Anyone can help me on this ?

Thanks

Hi,

Could you let me know how did you create the new RAID? From OMSA or from LCC or from the RAID controller BIOS? Can you let me know the new drive Dell PN#? Are they certified Dell drives? Are the iDRAC/LCC, BIOS and RAID firmware up to date? Do you have iDRAC access? If the drives are left without configured, does BSOD happens? If it doesn't, do you have OMSA installed and are the drives listed in OMSA?

Hi Joey,

I have already managed to connect the second raid 5 to the server, following your suggestions.
Basically I connected to the server via idrac9 and updated the idrac and lifecycle controller firmware, the RAID controller firmware and the BIOS firmware.
After that, I created the virtual disk with raid 5 again, this time on idrac9 and windows started without any BSOD.

Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Joey,

Thanks for you reply.

I created the RAID in the configuration manager (system setup), RAID controller BIOS.
The partnumber of the disks is the 400-AVHG and they are dell certified disks.

I have not checked if the firmware is up to date and I don't have access to idrac yet. I also did not test booting the server without any disk configuration. I will follow these steps and let you know how it worked.

Thanks

Hi,

May I know what RAID controller are you using on the R640, and the existing drives on RAID5, what DPN# are used? Do you have an active warranty on the server?

Hi Joey,

The raid controller we use is the perc h730p.
The 3x 600GB disks in the existing raid 5, the DPN is 0XXTRP (P/N: 1XF230-150)
And I believe that we still have an active guarantee until 07 AUG 2022 according to our service tag.
It was not yet possible to carry out the tests suggested in the previous post, because this is a production server and we only managed to create downtime on weekends.

thanks

Hello,

I would keep as troubleshooting line the one that Joey suggested, are you agree?

So please check if BSOD is present also without any disk configuration once you test it.

Thanks

Hi,

If you can and if you do have any other hard drives, try installing them for troubleshooting purpose. When creating the new RAID 5 VD, did you initialize the RAID 5? Have you tried to check if the system is using GPT partition?
