Poweredge R630 sudden freeze (both OS and IDRAC)

I have a PE R630 running for over six years. The machine is recently (about a month ago) updated to Ubuntu 22.04 and the latest BIOS (v2.13.0).

The machine has worked without any issue until two days ago when it suddenly became unreachable, both via the NICS and via IDRAC.

Today I went to the machine and after plugging in a monitor I only sat three vertical stripes. I then rebooted the machine after which it booted normally.

There is nothing in the logs in IDRAC or in the OS logs (syslog). The last log entry from Monday is a UFW block message, and the next entry in the log is when I rebooted the machine. There are no error messages whatsoever.

It looks as if the machine came to a total freeze on Monday. The weird (and scary) part is that it not only freezed inside the OS, but IDRAC was not available and accessible either. Not even a ping worked.

The only logical explaination I had was that the machine had lost power, but that ws not the case. Both PSUs were active, and the leds on the SAS disks were on too.

Does anyone have a clue on what might have happened? This was by change not one of our production machines, but we have five R630 machines in total, and three are used for production. So I need to know why this happened and how I can avoid it to happen again.

The fact that both the OS and IDRAC was not reachable is very weird.

Thank you very much for any hints.

Regards,

Hello @heisa,

Well, yeah, it's weird even iDRAC is not accessible, probably in a hung state. You mentioned iDRAC became unreachable, do you mean it's not responding to ping?

You have already done a good job by checking the logs, both iDRAC and OS. To my opinion, I couldn't think of any other root cause other than the OS update. You mentioned the server ran over six years with no issue and the issue occurred. That left me thinking could be OS issue? I'm not an expert in Ubuntu. I ran a check on the OS compatibility, seems that R630 only supports up to 18.04.
