PowerEdge R450 - iDRAC9 - power on system doesn't work after "repurpose or retire" feature in Lifecycle Controller

Hi,

as title above describe, I'm having this issue. When I start server and by pressing F10 - go to Lifecycle controller, where I select "hardware configuration" and then "repurporse or retire system" and then select these options:

  • All Embedded Applications
  • BIOS (reset default and clear NVRAM)
  • Hardware Cache (clear PERC NVCache)
  • Cryptographic Erase Disks

doing everything remotely via iDRAC9, I will succesfully finish all these cleaning procedures, but then server shutdown and then I start it once again via iDRAC9 - it will start, but after 1 - 2 mins, it will again shutdown and then I'm unable to boot it once again remotely via iDRAC, so I have to physically access the server and press the power button there for 5 seconds (it slowly lights up and down - probably some "sleeping" mode) and once the light is completely off, I have to press it to turn it on.

I was trying to start/boot it via "Power on System" button in the main dashboard menu and also via Virtual console with "Power" button in the upper bar and then selecting "Power on System" (only option available in the menu anyway)

I have also noticed that after clean-up/retire and repurpose, the iDRAC goes offline for like 2 minutes (unable to connect via web browser, nor able to ping the ip address). I thought, the iDRAC should be online ALL the time, unless there is no electricity or network connection, which wasn't the case.

Lastly, not that important - I wonder, what exactly the option "all embedded applications" in the "repurpose or retire" menu does. My assumption is that cleans every firmware to the default state and removes additional firmware (if any was added before).

Hello,

take my answer with caution, but i think the embedded part nukes the idrac to new not configured state.

Also I think the idrac, once reset in a blank state, takes around 2 minutes during the next boot to configure itself

@mazzinia_ Hello, thanks for your reply. I will try next time to make this cleaning procedure without selecting "All embedded applications"..

Just to be clear - the iDRAC config itself won't reset after the procedure above. The IP address will stay, but maybe it somehow get temporarily unavailable.

@mazzinia_ I tried two times without selecting "all embedded applications" and the problem hasn't occurred yet. I think, you are right. From now on, I will be using "all embedded applications" only if I would like to set all the firmware versions to default.
