Mellanox ConnectX-4 Lx 25GbE not recognized on R430 and R440
Hello,
I have a problem with Mellanox ConnectX-4 Lx 25GbE network cards. Indeed, they are not recognized.
I tried on two different R430 servers with the following versions:
- Bios: 2.12.1
- Lifecycle Controller Firmware: 2.75.100.75
As the card was not recognized, I tried on a R440 server with the following versions:
- Bios: 2.9.3
- Lifecycle Controller Firmware: 4.40.00.00
However, the card is still not recognized.
I tried with two Mellanox ConnectX-4 Lx 25GbE network cards (new), but the result is still the same.
Do you have any idea?
Thank you,

Hello again @4lexischevalier,
The only problem I can think on at this point is that these cards are not Dell branded and may have a custom firmware that is not working on the server.
Normally, firmware update could solve the problem, but as it is not possible to update the firmware you are not able to make this card appear on the Network Settings of LCC.
Regards.

Hello,
Thanks for your help, I am using the Low Profile Riser from the following location on R440:
An Intel 10G card is well recognized, but not a Mellanox 25G. Below is a picture of one of the Mellanox cards.
NB : CSIOR is enabled.

Hello 4lexischevalier,
I'm sorry to see the Mellanox is not being recognized.
Check you are using the correct slot:
R430 slot priority page 112 depending on your riser configuration it should use slot 2 or 1:
https://dell.to/3g6n2T6
R440 slot priority page 62 depending on your riser configuration you should use either slot 2 or 3:
https://dell.to/3z5aFiu
Can you check if the Lifecycle controller recognizes it and that CSIOR (Collect System Inventory on Restart) is enabled.
Boot to F10 LifeCycle controller > Hardware Configuration > Hardware Inventory > check if recognized
CSIOR
-boot to F2 -> System Setup -> iDRAC Settings -> Lifecycle Controller to check status
-Collect System Inventory on Restart set to Enabled.
If it still is not recognized can you post image of the label on the card and the SFP for me to verify part numbers, and you OS and version.

Thank you for the information. Good news is you have been able to verify the slot works with the 10G so we know the slot is good.
It would appear either bad card(s) or incompatibility. Have you been able to test these cards in any system that they do get detected properly?
Is the card shown in Boot to F10 LifeCycle controller > Hardware Configuration > Hardware Inventory > ?
On the picture of the card I'm not seeing a DP/N number (Dell part number). Do you see a sticker with the DP/N number?

Hello,
Thank you for your help. To answer the questions:
I have only tried on Dell R430/R440 servers and with several new Mellanox 25G cards, but I may try on other server of another brand next week.
The cards are not seen in the Hardware Inventory on the Dell R430 and Dell R440.
The cards do not have a Dell Part Number, as they come from Mellanox directly.

Hello,
Thank you for your answer, but as I said in my message of "06-04-2021 08:48 AM", I use a Low Profile Riser.
I don't plug the card directly to the PCI slot, but to the Riser. The picture was only to show the slot where I plug the Riser.
Also, a 10G card is well recognized by my Riser.
I use the riser provided by Dell when I bought the server which corresponds to the URL.
Best regards,

On R440 you need to use PCIe riser to connect cards. You can refer below link for details on left riser and right riser for R440. Directly connecting PCIe Card to the R440 motherboard slots are not supported hence we can not guarantee that it will work.

Hello 4lexischevalier,
Please let me know how it goes with the Mellanox card in other server brand.
I may recommend get one of our ConnectX-4 with our validated firmware and check results in the R430/R440.

Hello,
Today I tried a new Mellanox card in another R440. I don't explain it but the card is recognized in the "Hardware Inventory" of the Lifecycle Controller, but I didn't see it in the iDRAC.
I don't know if this is normal, but at least the card is recognized.

Hello 4lexischevalier,
That is great to see. I'd recommend to update the driver from our web site.

Hello,
Today, I updated all the drivers via a full R440 SUU image created this morning from Dell EMC Repository Manager, but I did not see the update of the drivers of the Mellanox cards.
After the update, the cards remain invisible in iDRAC.
