iDRAC 9 support assist fails to communicate with Dell

I'm trying to setup SupportAssist on several iDRAC 9 cards.

USB pass through has been enabled.

iDRAC Service Module (3.5.1) is running.

When i try to open SupportAssist on the iDRAC I am prompted to retry network connection.

Using either direct connection or through a proxy neither works.

I've had the firewall and the proxy monitored and nothing hits them.

I used putty to SSH onto the iDRAC, I can ping both. I pinged dell.com and it showed up on the firewall (blocked to 143.166.135.105).

I've tried this on 2 different cards, with the same result.

Anyone any idea what else i can try?

While searching for an answer I get a lot of hits from SupportAssist Enterprise - is this to replace OpenManage Enterprise?

Thanks in advance any help would be appreciated.

Kev_newcastle,

The issue your seeing is due to SupportAssist requiring you use the HOST NIC to talk to the Dell backend, it uses the iSM to send the instructions to go out to the Host Nic then to the internet.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi @DELL-Chris H

Do you think you could clarify the solution?

I have the same issue, installed Service Module (3.5.1) but I'm unable to connect to Support Assist on my R440 hosts, although my SANs are connecting and uploading without error.

Thanks in advance

Hi Grodon,

i guess this was the solution from Chris.

If you need further assistance please describe your failure and setup exactly.

Hi thanks for the reply @Dell-Martin S

My issue is the same\similar to the OP

I've installed iSM on the host but when I try to Register for SupportAssist the Network Connection fails, entering the proxy information does not resolve the connection issue. SANs on the same network are uploading CloudIQ without error.

iDRAC settings report

"RAC0606: The network connection test operation was successful."

Any advice appreciated

Hi,

could it be that the iDrac is in a network that is not allowed to communicate to outside of his network?

@Dell-Martin S

The ESXi Host are on the same network with the same gateway as my ME4240 SANs these have no issue uploading SupportAssist data, so I don't think that can be the issue. Clearly I'm missing something.

I've noticed the attached error

iDRAC Error.png

I have restarted the iDRAC and as above the OS to iDRAC Pass-through test works ok

Hi.

could you please describe, step by step, every step you make to do the registration?

Because it sounds to me that you mix 2 different methods.

@Dell-Martin S

Thanks for the response

Login to the iDRAC
Select Maintenance – SupportAssist
This runs for a while trying to load

Loading.png

Select Register for SupportAssist
Next

loading2.png

Again tries to load, Direct Connection or via Proxy

As above at this point the SRV042 error log is created

At which point is the method mixed?

Thanks

Hi @Dell-Martin S

Thank you for that, I have had a quick look at the document, just for info the iDRAC NIC Selection is dedicated.

I will try and get a look through the rest today.

Thanks for the information

Hi @Dell-Martin S

I changed to LOM1 without any change to access

Change to LOM2 and have now lost connection to the iDRAC GUI, I've reset the iDRAC but no joy.

I have an SSH connection to the server via Putty can a factory reset the iDRAC from the command line?

Thanks

Hello Chris,

i had the same problem and i have resolved it opening the firewall ports for esxi. This behavior is only on registration phase or also when there is a failure?

Who is that send the notifications to dell website? idrac or esxi?

Thank you in advance.
