How to change fan speed or update R420

I have an R420 server that always runs the fans at high speeds. I cannot find an option in any startup menu or the lifecycle controller for fan speed. I have tried to update the server but I dont know where to start. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi @MertlTech,

Fan speed is by design to enhance the cooling function for improving the long-term reliability of a CPU and performance.

However, we do have the option to change the thermal settings starting from 12G (PE R420)

But it is not recommended to lower fan speed. Please refer to the video Fan Speed Control on PowerEdge Servers for reason.

The iDRAC creates a thermal profile based on the hardware installed. If any third-party hardware is installed, the thermal profile of the server will increase and make sure the server chassis is properly seated.

Also, please make sure that there are no defects in the current system and that the room temperature is well within range to operate a server (i.e: (50 °F to 95 °F) with no direct sunlight on the equipment)

Fan speed of the server is not configurable. It is decided based on the configuration and thermal requirements of the server. Can you update latest iDRAC and BIOS FW to the server and check the behavior? Did you have any third party components installed on the server?
