Dell R820 NIC - 40GbE
Hey there,
If I were to install a Dual port 40GbE NIC in an R820 server.. (Confirmed it is compatible)
Would it be reverse compatible and be able to handle the 1GbE and 10GbE stuff as well?
Thank you

Hi @S3rverSavvs,
In general, yes. The hardware should be able to auto negotiate the speed.

Hmmmm...... i have my doubt, because QSFp+ is phys. a little bit different. You can configure a (switch) port into 4x10 and with the right breakout cable you will get 4x10 but i dont see how 1G will work. Also this will be valid for a switch i dont believe that a NiC can dot it.
The Dell Adapter matrix doesnst show supportet configurations.
We have tons of s4810, s6100 switches.
please check the data spec for the NC and which transceiver will be supportet.
Regards,
Jörg

Hi Jörg,
Yeah, that depending on products and capability. Some switches like S4148, the QSFP breakout can be configured to run at 1G on the switch. But, one would wonder why.
