Dell R740 & Tesla V100
We are currently trying to use a Dell R40 XD with a NVIDIA Tesla V100 card.
The existing Power connection that came with out 740XD did not seem to have any connectors that would fit the power in the back of the GPU so we ordered the specific cable to connect the main board to the Tesla V100 which we connected and powered on the system.
When we attempted to detect the card in Ubuntu using nvidia-smi we got "no devices where found"
When looking through dmesg we got "GPU does not have the necessary power cables connected"
We then read that more powerful PSU's may be required and we upgraded from 1100W to 2000W PSU's.
We attempted to detect the card again with the same error messages, we have tried both the raiser power point and also the onboard power points that state 225W
But we are still seeing the same issue reported.
What are we missing? I can only see one power connector on the back of the NVIDIA card which is connected and from what i have read we have the right power cable and the minimum power proivded by PSUs.
To add to this the GPU is also detected within the IDRAC.
Can anyone provide any further advise?
Thank you

Hello,
This issue is most commonly caused by missing or incorrect GPU enablement hardware, particularly:
Incorrect or incomplete power cabling
Missing GPU enablement kit
Improper riser configuration
Insufficient airflow or thermal configuration
High-performance fans and airflow shroud missing
Ensure that both the processors are installed.
Reference: GPU or ACLR card installation guidelines

NOTE: While installing a GPU on riser 1, connect the GPU/FPGA power cable to the connector on riser 1 and route the cable through the slot on the GPU air shroud.
Connect the other end of the GPU/FPGA power cable to the GPU.
I would recommend acquiring the GPU Enablement Customer Kit
*330-BBMO - CUS,ASSY,MECH,GPU,ENABLMT,R740
*490-BEIX - CUS,ASSY,MECH,GPU,ENABLMT,R740
Either one will work.
Also make sure your system firmware is up to date: BIOS and iDRAC

@DELL-Charles R Thank you Charles for the fast response in relation to this query, we will look at purchasing the Enablement kit you have advised and go from there. James

@James VDW Good luck with purchasing the enablement kit I don't think anyone has it in stock If they do it will be $1000 at least. I could supply the part list for the enablement kit to piece it together, however as I understand it the GPU's are not supported in the R740 XD, only the plain R740.

@jabuzz You are correct, ours is a R740 XD.. I could not find this enablement kit anywhere, when we spoke to the supplier who shipped us the server they actually stated they had put the high performance fans in the chassis and we already had the right CPUs. We purchased the additional higher power PSUs and they shipped us the required cable. Once the correct DELL power cable was in the card was recognized by the OS. We had already purchased a cable and it fitted but it must have not quite been the correct one as it was not a DELL made one. I have no idea what the difference was as they looked exactly the same to me just the dell one was about 2 inches shorter. Its all working now though thankfully.
