Dell R440 server with SSD

Hi,

Greetings!

I would like to purchase Dell R440 Server for my office. I have the following question.

1) What is the latest version of R440? In HP, there will be a generation number along with the model number. Is this the same case in dell as well? 

2) Would like to use SSD but SSD's are expensive then SAS or SATA. So I am thinking to use only one SSD for operating system and remaining 3 SAS drive for application and data. Is it possible to do? In this case how do we configure RAID5? 

3) Would like to use VMWare and create 2 VM. One for DB and another one for ERP application. But management worried about having single physical server for both (Data and Application) because if that hardware fail due to some reason then the whole system will be in trouble. Is any better option do we have?

Yes. RAID 0 does not have any redundancy and will fail when disk failure happen. You need to have redundant RAID like 1,5,6,10 etc. to have disk redundancy.

Only X10 backplane support NVMe drives. You can check below link for details

@4Dell Thanks for your quick response. 

 

Now I understood about the generation.

 

If I configure RAID 0 for OS, then if it fails then my whole OS will be out of service. Is it possible to use 2 nvme so that I can configure RAID 1.

This is the configuration which I got from the supplier.

Second 4 on R440 denotes the generation of server. R440 is 14th Generation of Dell PowerEdge server. 15th Generation (R450) is the latest of same model

You can have SAS/SATA and SSD drives on same backplane. While creating backplane you need to create one RAID 0 with one SSD drive for OS and RAID 5 with 3 SAS drives for Data. 

What storage controller you are planning to have on the server
