Dell PowerEdge R430 Firmware BIOS Stages
Hello Experts,
I have a PowerEdge R430 that needs both BIOS and iDRAC updates. The current firmware versions are as follows:
FIRMWARE | CURRENT | PLANNED |
iDRAC | 2.50.50.50 | 2.85.85.85 |
BIOS | 2.7.1 |
What I am looking for to find out here is
- What is planned BIOS version that compatible with planned iDRAC version?
- What stages to go through for planned version?
- Should the both update parallelly?
I am hoping someone here will be able to answer this. Thanks in advance!

NibhathUsezer,
With how far behind your server is I would go a different route, as you can run into a lot worse issues if not.
Your BIOS and iDrac are currently 7 and 8 years behind, so what you will have to do is walk them both up together incrementally, as jumping to the latest can cause the BIOS and iDrac to not be able to communicate with each other and would require a new motherboard.
So what you will need to do is go to the support page for the R430 here. Locate the BIOS update, next to the version number you will see Older Versions, click that and then locate a BIOS version no more than a couple from the version your server is currently on. Run that update, reboot, then go back to the support page and find the idrac update, again select Older versions, find the idrac update that is from the same timeframe as the BIOS update you just ran and run that.
You will then need to repeat that process walking only a couple bios updates at a time and then matching the idrac update to the same timeframe, until you get to current.
To answer your other question, I would run them individually and not at the same time, especially with the server being so far back.
Let me know if this helps.

Hi,
Stages for Updating to the Planned Versions
Step 1: Backup Current Configurations
Backup the current BIOS settings and iDRAC configurations before proceeding.
Step 2: Update iDRAC First
It's generally recommended to update the iDRAC firmware first, as it manages the server's hardware and can facilitate smoother BIOS updates.
Download the iDRAC firmware (2.85.85.85) from Dell's support site and apply it via the iDRAC web interface or using a lifecycle controller (LC).
Step 3: Update BIOS
After the iDRAC update is complete, proceed with the BIOS update to version 2.12.0 or later.
This can be done via the iDRAC interface, a bootable USB, or the Dell OS Driver Pack if the server is running an operating system.
Step 4: Verify Updates
Reboot the server and verify that both the iDRAC and BIOS versions are updated successfully.
Reapply any custom BIOS settings if necessary.

Hi @Dell-Martin S
Many thanks for detailed steps.
Can I perform both iDARC and BIOS update one shot straight or do they need to be staged to reach planned version?
Best Regards
