Dell PowerEdge R420 0 Watt Power Consumption IDRAC
Hi,
I got an Dell PowerEdge R420 for my HomeLab. Since I bought it, it shows me weird values for the power consumption.
So some time ago the values looked okay with 40-80 watts in usage. But now this changed, currently over a longer period to 0 watts while running the same services as before, but also on the other hand some spikes with up to 6000 watts !? what is not possible with 2 x 500 watts as pdus.
I reseted the IDRAC but nothing changed.
Update
Also after reboot my system now shows "Power Consumption exceed PSU power delivery press F1 to boot or F2 to enter system setup"
Anyone an idea?
Kind regards
Christian

Christianhoh,
That error normally indicates that the hardware is drawing more power than the power supplies can provide, which normally is corrected by upgrading the power supplies to a larger size, if available, or reducing the hardware load. Now to start what I would suggest is that you update the servers BIOS, IDrac, Raid controller, etc and make sure this isn't being caused by something out of date false reporting. After updating then see if the error is resolved, if not then you may want to try dropping to like a single dimm and see if that resolves.
Let me know if this helps.

Thank you for the reply,
my system is already at the latest states of diver versions currently available.
The load should not be the matter, running 5 ubuntu virtual machines on Proxmox.
As Hardware currently configured I am using 2 Xeon(R) CPU E5-2430 v2 @ 2.50GHz, 128 GB DDR3 RAM, 4 Consumer SSDs and an average CPU load of 5%. So I cant explain where the high power usage should come from.
Also the system configuration has not be changed in over 6 month and the error only appeared like 3-4 days before.
Kind regards
Christian

update:
I misread the output of IDRAC, its NOT 6.000 watts; its 60.000 watts which should be absolute nonsense given the specs of my server; also every server out there

Hello @christianhoh, may we ask if you have applied what Chris has suggested previously? Thank you.

Thank you for those details. What you may want to try is taking the server to its minimum to post configuration, which is removing everything internally and externally from the server but the following;
•System Board
•CPU1 with heat sink (minimum for troubleshooting)
•Single DIMM configuration with DIMM in socket A1
•Control Panel with cable (to power system on)
•Expansion Riser
• PSU (and for redundant PSU also the PDB/PIB)
After that then see if the server still has the same issue. Another test you can try is removing one of the power supplies and see if it works without issue with one of the power supplies, but not with another, which would indicate an issue with the power supply itself.

Thanks for the reply,
i have seen now that after the update of the PSU Firmware maybe an error occurred. One PSU has the Firmware 07.15.7E, but the other one shows 07.00.00 and no part number. now i reinstall the update again and have a look whether this solves my problem. Also the Firmware for the PSU was 07.15.7F, therefore I think the update progress has been corrupted.
Kind regards
Christian

Hello,
so far I looked for available updates for all hardware components in my server, but have not found any new so far.
I tried to remove my DIMMs and added one after one till all DIMMs are placed again.
I cant use other power supplies because I have no to replace the installed.
So far no change in the system output, always 0 watts shown in IDRAC, with spikes to 60.000 watts.
Kind regards
Christian
