Dell PowerEdge R330 - Spontaneous Shutdown

Good afternoon.

There is a Dell PowerEdge R330 server. A strange malfunction has appeared: after a cold power-on (after several days of inactivity), the server can work from one to several days on its own turn off. Life cycle controller - works. On the enable command, the following message is displayed in the LCC log: "RAC0701 Requested system powerup." and nothing happens - the server does not turn on. When the power button is pressed, the server starts up and shuts down at random during the initialization procedure.

Similar issues have been found on the forums. According to the recommendations, we updated all the firmware for the current ones, including the power supply unit. The result is the same. If you turn off the power to the server (remove the wires on both power supplies) and then turn it on after a few minutes, the problem repeats - the server starts and turns off at an arbitrary time during the initialization procedure. If you de-energize it for a day and then turn it on, then it will start and work from one to several days and again turn off arbitrarily and everything will repeat again. The built-in diagnostics showed no problems.

Has anyone come across a similar one?

The "culprit" is found! The front panel board is to blame for everything, part number: CN-05Y1J9

After the substitution (from the working server) - the problem disappeared. I want to try to reflash it if possible, re-ordering a new one. I can't find the firmware for it ...

This isn't behavior I've personally heard of before. Updating firmware like you had is definitely a good step, but with it still occurring, I'm not sure what you can do without substituting parts. Do you have any known-good componentry available? I'd also check the SEL, if you haven't already. There may be some further information within it.

For diagnostics, the HDD, RAID controller were disabled. BP changed.
Yes, the syslog has been viewed - there are no errors.

I wouldn't expect it to be related to the processor, the failure rate for processors is really low, and the symptoms seem odd for that. I wouldn't expect the storage chain to be related at all, but swapping the backplane out isolates that entirely. What you might try, if possible, is testing the server at a minimum to POST configuration to see if you see any behavioral change. Provided you see no change, I'd be most inclined to fault a PSU, the power interposer board, or at worst, the system board. If you go to a Minimum to Post configuration, you should be able to test either power supply in either slot. Having 2 bad PSUs certainly seems unlikely. The PIB doesn't have any logic on it, I don't believe. I'm fairly sure it's essentially a breakout board.

The minimum components to allow the Dell™ PowerEdge™ R330 to complete POST are:

  • System board
  • CPU1 with heat sink (minimum for troubleshooting)
  • Single DIMM configuration with DIMM in socket A1
  • Control panel with cable (to power system on)
  • Power supply unit (and Power Distribution Board [PDB]/Power Interposer Board [PIB])

Do you mean the board that connects the PSU to the motherboard?
