DELL C6100 XS23-TY3 MAC address both set to 00 00 00 00 00

hi, and thanks for reading this,

I have an C6100 XS23-TY3 with two blades, longtime ago, one of them started having problems with the usb ports, so we take it to the IT external service and they updated the firmware (they were holding the computer for long time as we were moving to a new location), well the problem is that they just tested the usb ports ok, but once i installed the blade again i couldn't make the NICs work, checked in the bios and both were with MAC address set to 00. i have tried all the ways (free dos, linux, windows) to modify the nics (eeupdate, BootUtil (windows and dos)), even tried to copy the nic config (.eep) from the other blade. using linux i was able to at least make the system see the nics, but no results trying to set the MAC address to the values writen in the motherboard, i dont know what else to do, please help.

Hello,

Normally something like this could be seen when the update is corrupted or an unsupported method is used to update.

To start out with could you provide a little more information:

What Firmware was updated when this issue started and what version were you on and what version was it updated to?

Which NIC ports are affected? Mezz, LOM, BMC

What model NIC are they?

Without those details I can't specifically identify the issue, but in the meantime you could try flashing these firmware again as it could resolve the issue.:

BIOS

BMC

NIC's

@DELL-Charles R thanks for answering, this is the info I have:

  • BIOS Vendor: AMIBIOS (American Megatrends)

  • BIOS Type: Legacy BIOS (not UEFI)

  • Model: Quanta / Dell DCS XS23-TY3

  • BIOS Version: 1.71

  • BMC Version: 1.33

by the MAC address printed in the motherboard (MAC1: 00A0D1******) looking in internet they maybe are Intel, both NICs have the problem, the  BMC NIC IP can be set and works "fine" (to slow so I dont use it), sorry I have no more data.

Hello,

Could you update the BIOS?

PEC6100 system BIOS Version 1.81

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=n0fmm&oscode=naa&productcode=poweredge-c6100

Installation instructions at the bottom of the page.

@DELL-Charles R hi,

Thanks for answering, I updated the bios to 1.81, on boot it shows the message:

BMC Responding

NIC error

checking the bios setup the NICs have changed, there are no more 00, MAC address for both (NIC 1 and NIC 2) is showing: E0-8C-06-00-C0-4D

still not match the factory sticker.

thanks for the help

R.

I am not familiar with using the Intel BootUtil but I see you have used it.

See if these steps can let you set the MAC

Using BootUtil (DOS or UEFI Shell)

*bootutil -nic=1 -mac=00AABBCCDDEE*

*bootutil -nic=2 -mac=00AABBCCDDFF*

Replace 00AABBCCDDEE with the MAC address printed on the sticker. Ensure each NIC has a unique MAC.

Verify After Reprogramming

  • Boot into Linux or Windows and run:

    *ip link show*
    *ethtool -i eth0*

Confirm that each NIC now shows a unique and correct MAC address.

@DELL-Charles R hello, after trying with different versions of bootutil the answer is allways “no supported adapters". maybe the version of bootutil is to new? (2019), i searched the web for something older but couldnt find any.

thanks for the help

Boot to <F2> Advanced Menu > PCI Configuration:

Are the OnBoard 82576EB Disable/Enable Option ROM [Enabled]

You mentioned you tried EEUPDATE previously. I'm not familiar with this one either but you may try:

*eeupdate /nic=1 /mac=00AABBCCDDEE*
