Can't update Broadcom 10Gb BASET 2P 57406 Adptr firmware on Dell PowerEdge R430

Hello all!

We are trying to upgrade a network in our Dell PowerEdge R430 servers from 1 Gbps to 10 Gbps. Because of that we bought Broadcom 10Gb BASET 2P 57406 Adapters. But we failed to update the firmware in that adapters via iDRAC.

Corresponding jobs in iDRAC are done successfully with entries in LifeCycle log as below:

    2020-09-07T11:00:03+0300 SUP0518
Successfully updated the Broadcom NetXtreme-E Network Device Firmware 21.6 firmware to version 21.60.22.11.

The previous log entry was repeated 1 times.

    2020-09-07T10:55:04+0300 JCP037
The (installation or configuration) job JID_994652455913 is successfully completed.

    2020-09-07T10:54:55+0300 RED002
Package successfully downloaded.

    2020-09-07T10:54:30+0300 RED110
Downloading the Network_Firmware_YK81Y_WN64_21.60.22.11_01.EXE update package.

    2020-09-07T10:54:28+0300 RED054
An update job JID_994652683376 was created.

But Family Firmware Version still shows previous version (21.40.25.31) and there is always update to 21.60.22.11 available.

BIOS Version
2.11.0
Firmware Version
2.75.75.75

Such problem present on all our R430 servers we would like to upgrade network with mentioned cards.

I wonder what can be done to update the firmware on these cards? Does it make a sense to try to insert these Broadcom cards in 14th Generation servers (e.g. R440, R740) to try to update firmware?

Hey,

ok, so the update worked but it's not shown in iDRAC/LCC.

Good to know that the NICs are ok.

As mentioned before, when there was such an issue in the past, it got fixed with the following iDRAC/LCC update. But if you want to make sure that this gets fixed asap I recommend to contact the phone support in order to get it forwarded to the correct teams.

Best regards,
Stefan

Hi nkut.

So this same behavior is happening on all of your systems where you installed this NIC.

This is very interesting.

Could you please check if the CSIOR is enabled on the systems:

  1. Start Lifecycle Controller.
  2. In the left pane, click Hardware Configuration.
  3. In the right pane, select Hardware Inventory.
  4. Click Collect System Inventory on Restart.
  5. Under Collect System Inventory on Restart, click Enabled, and then click Finish.
The system inventory is updated after the next restart.

It might also just be a cosmetic issue, that LCC/iDRAC does not read out the correct fw version. To check if the correct version is installed, use the firmware DUP package in a supported OS to verify the installed version.

Let me know if it helped.

Best regards,
Stefan

Dear Stefan,

thanks a lot for prompt reply and suggestions!

I've checked on two of my Dell PE R430 servers and Collect System Inventory on Restart (CSIOR) option was enabled on both of them. I've tried to disable it ("Disable" + "Finish") and then enable again ("Enable" + "Finish"). A firmware version for Broadcom 10Gb BASET 2P 57406 adapter is still 21.40.25.31.

'./suu -c' on one of the server with such card shows the following:

./suu -c

Although there is Network_Firmware_YK81Y_WN64_21.60.22.11_01.EXE in the repository folder on the mounted ISO:

Hi,

so, also the SUU does not seem to see that there are updates available. It sounds like the mentioned cosmetic issue.

iDRAC and LCC log shows that the update was done, and the fact, that this is present on all your R430 makes it even more evident.
Generally, such issues are solved with the next firmware update of iDRAC.
I don't want to ask you to downgrade the iDRAC firmware and update it again, but if you like, you can do this on one of the systems, maybe the issue is solved then.

Best regards,
Stefan

Hi Stefan,

I've just tried to downgrade LCC firmware from 2.75.75.75 to 2.70.70.70 and then update it again to 2.75.75.75 as well as to update a firmware for Broadcom 10Gb BASET 2P 57406 Adptr. But result was the same as I wrote in my initial post of that thread.

Hi,

if we just can get some information if the update went good and it is just a cosmetic issue.

In iDRAC it always shows the older version information, right?

What about the LifeCycle Controller [Firmware Update --> Current Versions], is it the same here?

And what about the NIC BIOS menu [Ctrl+S], also the same?

I just want to see if the update went through as it should.

Best regards

Stefan

I also noticed the following messages in dmesg output:

And there is repeating message on the terminal as below:

The 57406's latest available firmware on Dell's site is 20.08.04.05. Not sure how you got a 21.x version installed.

See the 'Applies to' section here: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=2gxh1&oscode=naa

I fought trying to get 21.x and 22.x versions installed until reading the applies to section.
