Adding additional HDD to Dell 740 XL

Hi,

I have a Dell 740 XL server with 9 hdd's. each 600gb, rpm 15k & SAS 12 Gbps.

this server is running critical virtual machines which cannot be shutdown.

Can i add additional hdds'

1.which and how many?

2.without affecting the VM's  running on it

3.Do we need to change the Raid config or anything to add these. is there a procedure to follow?

It depends on what RAID controller and RAID level you have. If controller support Online Capacity Expansion(OCE) then you can add more disks to the existing virtual disk without impacting data. Please note while performing OCE performance of virtual disk will be degraded. Can you reconfirm the model? Is it R740XL or PowerEdge R740 XD.

Hi @AkshayWani,

Below are my suggestions.

1.which and how many?
> Equivalent or Higher capacity drives must be used and a minimum of two drives are required for expanding RAID10.

2.without affecting the VM's  running on it
> PERC H740P Mini supports online expansion but reconfiguring Virtual Disks typically impacts disk performance until the reconfiguration operation is complete. It is recommended that the procedure to be performed during a maintenance window.

3. Do we need to change the Raid config or anything to add these. is there a procedure to follow?
> No, the RAID configuration must be the same as the current setup, and please refer the below link on capacity expansion.

4.I just removed a one of the hdd from the server and it has created an alarm in idrac . How can i reset it ?
> The controller will check the inventory and since a drive is missing, you will see an error on the iDRAC. We suggest you to insert the drive back in the slot. It is not recommended to remove a drive which is a part of virtual disk while the server is online.
