Meet EMC Proven Professional and ECN Communty Expert: Allen Ward

Allen Ward is an Enterprise Storage Technology Specialist for London Life Insurance Company based in London, Ontario, Canada. He has been with the company for just over 13 years; specializing in storage technologies for the past 11 years. Allen works primarily with the Open Systems Disk and Fibre Channel SAN technologies as well as Systems Management and Replication technologies.

Allen’s involvement with EMC goes back to mid-2000 when he first implemented SAN technology. Since then, Allen has become active within the EMC User Community through the Powerlink Support Forums and more recently, ECN. Allen is an active member of the Studio.E, Ionix ControlCenter, Proven Professional, and Unified Storage Communities on ECN as well as continuing his involvement in the Support Forums.

Over the past year, Allen has participated in 2 Proven Exam development workshops. Participation in these workshops is a weeklong commitment and provides invaluable feedback to EMC from actual users in the field.

Allen was awarded the EMC Community Expert designation when the program first launched. He currently holds an EMCSA (CLARiiON) certification credential and expects to achieve Expert certification before EMC World this year. Allen is looking forward to EMC World in Las Vegas this year and meeting more of the folks he interacts with on ECN. In the meantime, check out his personal blog on ECN, (https://community.emc.com/people/Allen.Ward/blog) "A Storage Education for the Uninitiated". This blog provides an education on storage technologies, concepts, jargon, and more for those who don't live and breathe storage hardware technologies.

I did RRR. I got my CLARiiON Expert designation just in time for us to start deploying our VNX. I guess that will be next on the list.

So do you have any VNX certs already? I'm having a mental block at the moment for the VNX TA, but in 3 months I need to have it and I hope to have started on the latest Symmetrix (VMAX) IE and TA tracks by then

Thanks Jørg!  I haven't been around here for a while so I didn't see this until now. Hopefully soon I'll be back to more regular involvement with ECN (outside the Council) since our DC migration is finally getting going and my involvement will be letting up a bit. It's been a BUSY year :-)

As a customer of a company that doesn't see as much value in the certs as I do, I don't have a requirement to complete them, but right now I'm working through the VILT for DCA Storage Networking. If all goes well I should have that completed and the exam passed in the next couple of months.

Apparently not yet RRR. It's been getting busier now that migrations are in progress. This wasn't the plan :-(

Maybe in a few more months (as we near the end of Phase I and before we kick off Phase II-IV)

Sounds like you're a 1 man machine. If I didn't know any better that could actually be the truth.

Well, as for the "1 man" part of it, fortunately I'm part of a good team of folks who are all taking part. I actually only have to do a small portion of the actual migration work. I am responsible for the documentation and processes though. And as for "machine" I can only wish for that as it might make the long hours easier...

Realistically we were al expecting the work load to lighten up once things got underway, but with so many moving targets (and some that we wish could move) it is just getting busier right now.
