VCM Database
The Symmetrix Volume Configuration Management (VCM) database stores access configurations that are used to grant host access to logical devices in a Symmetrix storage array.
The VCM database resides on a special system resource logical device, referred to as the VCMDB device, on each Symmetrix storage array.
Information stored in the VCM database includes, but is not limited to:
Masking operations performed on Symmetrix storage devices result in modifications to the VCM database in the Symmetrix array. The VCM database can be backed up, restored, initialized and activated. The Symmetrix SDM Agent must be running in order to perform VCM database operations (except deleting backup files).

Hi
As far as I know, DMX 4the back end channel speed is 4 Gb/s compared to DMX 3 at 2 GB/s
Difference in Drive Capacity and arrays.
DMX4
73GB/1TB- 2400 Slot DMX Disk Array.
DMX3
73/300- 960 Slot DMX Disk Array.

Hi Rajeev,
Do you have access to Powerlink? There may be some good documents for you to look at there. So far you've asked about zoning, and now lots of Symm questions, what are you working on?

Hi Phukon
Thanks for reply.
But I wanted to know where this database exists..??
Is there any specific disk number or any specific location inside the storage array where this database exits..??
Also it will be very helpful if you provide me architecture of DMX-4
Thanks and Regards
Rajeev Ranjan.

Hi Gina,
Thanks for reply,
I am working as a storage implentor in a hetrogenous environment, where we have EMC (Clariion and Symmetrix) and Hitachi series .
I work on different different tools, but have not much Idea of H/W architecture of DMX-4 that is what I am looking for.
As far as Zoning is concern, then I replid for Rajshekahr's question (Need Zoning document)
Thanks and Regards
Rajeev.

Hi Rajeev.
The differences between the DMX-3 and DMX-4 is on the back-end speed, first is 2Gbps and last 4Gbps.
Regarding the VCMDB, now this DB resides on the the two SFS (Symmetrix File System) volumes that are automatically created when binfile is build. You can identify them easily on bin. A small volume called still called VCM must still be created but it will be used just as a normal gatekeeper.
regards

Hi Rajeev,
Have a Good Day,
The Diffrence between Symmetrix DMX3 and DMX4.
Symmetrix DMX-4 the back end channel speed is 4 Gb/s Compared to DMX 3 at 2 GB/s
Difference in Drive Capacity and arrays is important difference between.
Symmetrix DMX-4 is the most advanced and widely deployed business continuity platform with
unique capabilities like non-disruptive upgrades, multi-site disaster recovery, and enterprise
consistency.
It has the unique ability to tier different drive types within the array, allowing for massive
consolidation, up to 1 PetaByte
Due to the Symmetrix processing power and amount of memory, high levels of predictable
performance is available for the most demanding applications
Meanwhile Symmetrix DMX-4 systems consume less power, placing lower demands on data center
cooling equipment.
And to in order to secure people, infrastructure, and data, new built-in capabilities, including RSA
integration, provide industry leading information-centric security
And related to the VCMDB - If your working on Symmetrix Command Line Interface - Solutions enabler then you query the VCMDB database location with the
with below command
#symmaskdb –sid list database
EMC recommends backing up the VCMDB after all additions are made (not after each symmask add command).
Thanks & Regards

Hi Rajeev,
As Gina has suggested, if you have access to EMC Powerlink that is the place to look for all of your technical answers (http://www.emc.com/support-training/support/emc-powerlink.htm). "Information at your fingertips" is what we like to call it. Even if there are no materials you are looking for, you can chat with support who should be able to answer your questions providing that they are info that are ok for them to disclose.
EMC Symmetrix Series: How They Compare (http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/comparison/emc-symmetrix-dmx.htm) has a simple, easy to view comparison chart which will let you drilled down to detailed specs. Our marketing folks are doing an excellent job with the site, presenting contents in a manner our customers like to see.
DMX-3 & 4 Manuals, which can be found on Powerlink, have solid sections on each architectures but I'm guessing that the comparison chart is more along the line of what you are looking for.
As for VCMDB, Vinod and Phukon nailed it so if you must have figured out your answer via Solution Enabler or looking at the bin by now
