Any advice for someone in a non-technical role who is taking the ISM (E20-001) exam?
Hi,
My name is Tim and I'm considering taking the ISM exam as well. Is the course mandatory or can I study for the exam at my own pace and then sit for it? Also, what is the cost of the exam?
I'll probably schedule my test several months out. I've been working in the storage industry for almost a year now, but it's a marketing role - not technical. Plus, I don't have an IT/technical/computer background, so I expect to have to work pretty hard to pass it.

Hi Tim,
I branched your question to a new discussion since yours is a little different. I think its fantastic you are taking the ISM exam!
I'm sure our proven advisor will answer some of the direct questions. Lets try to find someone to help you with the non-technical part of this question. Can you tell us what part of the storage industry you are working with as a marketer?

Damn, you guys are quick with the forum responses. I called the EMC Education Services number and left a message, sent an e-mail to the general address days ago, and hadn't heard back. Leaving a comment on the forum yielded all I needed in under 5 minutes. Now I know where to go for info! :-)
Yes, I did look at that document. Looks like it sticks pretty close to the sections that divide the ISM book.
The other question I had was what advantages the ISM cert has over the SNIA Foundations Cert?

OK, the editing there made me look like a delinquent. LOL. All I said was d*mn, for the record. :-) Don't want to offend anyone in the forum.

You just took all the fun out of us trying to figure out what 4-letter word you used!!

We try to get the questions answered quickly around here. Friday afternoons we tend to try to close things out because we don't have total coverage on weekends. So I'm glad we were able to help you out, but sometimes we do take a little longer (don't want you think we're ignoring you if we answer slower next time!).
Be sure to check out the comments and the links I posted in the other thread - they are some pretty good posts about studying. I'll try to find somone who is in your same situation who was able to pass the ISM exam, and get them to post their experience.

Sure, thanks for the quick response.
I work for Seven10 Storage Software, and we live in the world of archiving. One of our products is disaster recovery software for EMC Centera, and the other product is long-term archiving software that can act as Atmos & Centera gateways, as well as implement tiering, compliance, and retention policies.
I have a liberal arts background, so I need to sharpen my IT technical skills. I strongly believe that all sales and marketing guys should be somewhat technical in order to be able to thoroughly educate partners and prospects.
I had actually ordered the ISM book long before I even know it was a textbook to prepare for an exam. Since I never took formal IT courses or computer science courses, I'm expecting a bit of an uphill battle while studying. But the credential and knowledge will make me a better marketer, for sure.

No offense taken just wondering if we have an issue with the new message tracking system that EDServices@emc.com has in place.

Hi Tim -
All of the EMC Proven Professional training is recommended not required.
The Proven Team always announces when an exam is being updated so you should check the EMC Education Services site for the latest exam description document. It has links to a free practice test and a list of possible exam topics. You should also be sure ti review the exam description doc again at least two weeks before testing just to be sure it isnt being updated.
Each time you sit for the exam there is a $200 dollar sitting fee. Payable by voucher, credit card or cash. Exams are available at Pearson VUE testing centers.
Have you looked at the exam description document yet?

Hi there,
Just checking to see if anyone can clarify a bit the differences between the SNIA associate-level certification and a more vendor-specific certification such as the EMCISA? Thanks.

If you check out the "details" link in the table on this page it will give you a good idea of what you get from the ISA credential. http://edu.corp.emc.com/gs/certification/tracks/emcpa_track.aspx
