Resolution stopped displaying

Up until a week ago I could choose to display a resolution of 1600x1200 on my projector. I was playing a quicktime movie and all of a sudden the image started jumping around, them it was tall and narrow, then there was just a bunch of flickering lines. The On Screen Display would not even show.

Using my system preferences I was able to reduce the resolution to 1400x1050 and it worked fine. But when I try and select the 1600x1200 the projector starts to show the new resolution, you even see it come up briefly, then it shows source lost, then the VGA connector, says searching, a blue screen appears while it does but is say. Then it show a blank screen. The OSD will not even come up.

Any ideas why it works then would stop?

Using MacBook, Intel core Dual, 1GB memory.

Using a 50 VGA cable.
