How do I use a remote control to control my powerpoint presentation with Dell projector and xps m1210

The projector remote control did not advance pages.  I wondered how it could since it is not controlling my laptop.  Do I need a remote control for the m1210?  What is the projector remote control supposed to control?  All that worked was on and off.  I know this is a stupid question, but Please help anyway.  Thanks.
