Hot projector

I have a Dell 2200MP projector.  Another co-worker of mine borrowed the projector and said that it got hot enough to start a fire....   I've turned it on and it's been running for an hour 1/2.  It's hot, but will not burn my hand... or at least right away.  The fan is on and I can still feel the hot air blowing out at 6" - 8" away and the temp warning light is off.  Is this normal?  What should the normal temp of the projector be around?   Is there anyway to tell if the fan is faulty and could be somewhat weak?
