Dell 2300mp Troubleshooting

I recently acquired a Dell 2300mp projector and he has no idea what's wrong with it and was going to throw it out. When I plug it in the power light flashes and then I press the power button it lights up green for about 1 minute or 2 and then the orange lamp light comes on. I assume the lamp is dead but I don't want to buy a new lamp and find out there are other problems. Should the fans start up?
