3200mp won't play standard dvds properly

I have recently purchased a new blu-ray player (Samsung BD-P3600).  My setup is as follows:

I have the unit connected to a Yamaha A/V receiver Rx-V740 via component (no hdmi in this setup). The component output of  the receiver goes to a component splitter unit that sends the component signal to my Sony HDTV and my Dell 3200MP Projector.

problem as follows:

When I play blu-ray discs the image is fine on both displays.  When I play standard dvds the image is fine on the TV but on the projector the image down converts to a 4:3 low resolution format and is seriously off color.

I have tried the various settings for resolution in the bd-p3600 & image format on the projector
