1800mp remote USB device sw not installing

Bought a new Dell 1800MP projector and it works OK, but the remote control is via a USB connection from the laptop to projector.

 

On an old Gateway the USB devices software was found and installed, but on a newer Gateway and an IBM X40 laptop the USB discovery process reports that an error in the USB device occurred and it quits.  I'm logged on as Administrator on all the laptops and am running latest Windows XP SP2.  I had the projector and laptop on and working when I connect the USB cable.

 

Any ideas?  Anyway to get a download of the necessary software to manually install it.

 

>>>>>  I tried the same laptops again today but this time was strict on the order of connections. I connected USB and VGA cables to the projector and laptop with the laptop off and projector off.  Then powered on the projector.  When it output light, I turned on the laptop.  Remote controller worked fine after this process.  Software must have been loaded OK yesterday but some kind of USB connection issue.
