My Dell app crashing on load or soon after load

Trying to get around to registering my dell box and the My Dell app keeps crashing. No error is given it just closes.

I have tried a repair, reset, and uninstalling, and getting the version at the microsoft app store.

What am I doing wrong with this app?

Odd that if it crashes not errors?

If you are expecting a BSOD or something else, like a popup window, that might not happen.

You might find data though in the Event Viewer or the Reliability History viewer. They usually will show application error data.

If you purchased the computer directly from Dell, it is already registered.

i registered it through the website instead.

Yeah there is something in the event viewer that I forwarded to Dell Support. I have a hunch its a windows 11 issue

Faulting application name: MyDell.exe, version: 2.0.30.0, time stamp: 0x6245391f
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x00007ffc7200b1ce
Faulting process id: 0x348c
Faulting application start time: 0x01d862698d847119
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\DellInc.MyDell_2.0.30.0_x64__htrsf667h5kn2\MyDell.exe
Faulting module path: unknown
Report Id: f33ef08c-8749-49c9-8c81-c19a4be7af8b
Faulting package full name: DellInc.MyDell_2.0.30.0_x64__htrsf667h5kn2
Faulting package-relative application ID: Fusion

I have tried most of the obvious things included reinstalling the dell app.

Well, I know what your problem possibly is?

First, "Exception code: 0xc0000005" indicates a memory access violation. I suspect you are NOT running as Administrator possibly?

See "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps" not owned by you:

You can't access it. Administrators can.

I am running as the Administrator so I can get to that...

It is possible you had an install problem or MYDELL is not set to run as Administrator? However, you can't see it to change that?

Maybe IF you follow these instructions it might work for you, I am NOT sure, but you can try it if you wish:

=============

  1. Open Start on Windows 11.
  2. Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.
  3. Type the following command to enable the Windows 11 Administrator account and press Enter: net user "Administrator" /active:yes.

==============

Once you do that, you should be able to access C:\Program Files\WindowsApps and MYDELL should also work for you.

To RESET the Administrator use the same set of instructions, but the LAST line use 'no' instead of 'yes'.

You are onto something here I am unable to access the windows apps folder no matter what I do unless I switch to the Administrator account. "My Dell" app seems stable running as the but all my settings are gone.

The permissions must be messed up because it says my normal user account is also admin. I dont seem to be able to modify the attributes from the gui to get that access.

No, I am not sure that 'you' have a problem. As an Administrator, at least part of the group, you do NOT have access to it. I use Explorer++ as my File Explorer (instead of Windows File Manager). Here is what happens IF I try to open that folder:

ispalten_0-1652102586302.png

I don't want to permanently get access either, no need for it, and my permissions are not messed up I feel.

Now when I RMB on the program and run it AS ADMINISTRATOR, it works fine:

That is because the Administrator has access. If you open the PROPERTIES of that folder, you'll see who is the owner (Trusted Installer) and who has what access:

I don't think 'you' can fix this? Possible MYDELL is not running as an Administrator when it is installing? However, I don't think it needs to be, and I have no problems with it. Could try installing it as Administrator to be sure? Also, contact Dell and see if they know how to make it work as it seems that it can't access the folder? I assume you've not done this and supplied the file error to them.

I'd run SFC /SCANNOW and DISM (see this URL for full details, https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-dism-command-line-utility-repair-windows-10-image ) at this point to make sure your OS is OK.

Also run some malware scans too, like MALWAREBYTES (https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download ) to check if you've picked up something that might be causing a problem.

If you do have some Permissions messed up, it would be more than just that one probably. I've never had much success restoring all of them, but could do it individually, and that is chore... however, you could Google "how to restore windows default permissions" if you want to know how.

Still, as I've shown above, not having access to that particular folder is normal for someone that is not the REAL Administrator, but only part of the group that has limited Administrator functions.

I'm wondering if you have Fusion Services installed? MyDell needs that?

Go to the Support page for d/l's and have it run to find files for you. If you are missing it, it should find it?

@ispalten I have (had) similar issue: when I start the MyDell aplication, the blue MyDell logo appears, but disappears again within a few seconds. The program doesn't start further although it stays present in system tray.

Now i have followed the program shortcut into the program files folder, and I changed its security settings to enable full management. Now it appears I can use the program without any issues...
