Dell website Drivers and Downloads not working / not updating

Hello.  I have a Dell Inspiron 16 5620.  Support Assist app was not working after a Dell update.  Dell technician managed to correct the problem and it is working fine now.  However, when I go do the Dell website, the Drivers and Downloads update does not work.  It remains in an endless loop.  Anyone else has a simila problem?  How to fix it?  I have Windows 11 Home OS.  Thank you.

Hi Divonnais:

What is your antivirus and default browser, do you have the current SupportAssist v4.0.3 installed, and is your SupportAssist configured to run automatic update checks and optimization scans at Settings | Scans and Optimizations? (***  see my warning in the footnote below).  See the section titled Schedule Updates, Scans, and Optimizations in the SupportAssist v4.0 User Guide <here> for more information on configuring background scans.

If you browse to your Inspiron 16 5620 support page https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-16-5620-laptop/drivers does the "endless loop" occur immediately when you land on that web page, or only after you click the blue "Check for Updates" button?  Note that several users have reported this type of glitchy behaviour on their support page in recent months (see my 24-Apr-2024 post in Cannot See Expandable "View List" of Recommended Software on Dell Support Site for one example) but as a general rule these are usually users like me who have uninstalled SupportAssit from their computer or have a corrupted SupportAssist installation.

Also note that there are several known issues with the current SupportAssist v4.0.3 (see employee DELL-Chris M's 10-Jun-2024 SupportAssist, "Hardware scan fails", "We ran into a problem" about some of the known bugs in SupportAssist v4.0.3) so it's not surprising that you might be seeing some glitches or odd behaviour with this version.  At this point your best option might be to simply wait until a new SupportAssist version is released with a few bug fixes.

--------------------------------------

If you'd like to continue troubleshooting, temporarily disable all browser extensions in your default browser and then see if that solves the "endless loop" problem on your Inspiron 5620 support page, just in case an ad blocker or some other browser extension is causing the problem.  If you have a different browser installed also check if the problem occurs in that alternate browser as well.

If you haven't already done so, I'd strongly advise that you permanently disable your Windows Fast Startup power option as instructed in Brink's ElevenForums tutorial Turn On or Off Fast Startup in Windows 11 (for Win 10 users, see <here>) and then re-boot a few times to ensure the setting change takes effect.  The Fast Startup power option (also known as hybrid boot-up / hybrid shutdown) is enabled by default in Win 10 and Win 11 but it can sometimes interfere with the loading and initialization of drivers and services at boot-up and cause all sorts of unexpected glitches and problems with a wide range of programs, including Windows Updates. For example, see the Microsoft support article Updates may not be installed with Fast Startup in Windows 10.

Once Fast Startup is disabled then re-boot your computer, immediately browse to your Inspiron 16 5620 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-16-5620-laptop/drivers (i.e., without launching SupportAssist from your Windows start menu or desktop shortcut) and see if that solves the problem.  If you launch SupportAssist manually and start the SupportAssist agent BEFORE browsing to your support page (or if your SupportAssist agent is silently running an automatic background task) it's always possible this is what is causing the web page for your support site to get stuck in an "endless loop" while it tries to check the status of your SupportAssist installation.

*** Just an aside.  I removed SupportAssist from my Inspiron 15 5584 after my service warranty expired [I currently use Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x to check for available updates and run the F12 ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) from my Dell BIOS if I want to run a hardware diagnostic], but when I did use SupportAssist I always disabled all background update and system optimization scans in my SupportAssist settings and only ran manual update checks and hardware diagnostics from the SupportAssist Home tab. I never allowed SupportAssist to run "system optimization" scans (Clean Files / Tune Performance / Optimize Network) because I felt they were too aggressive and had the potential to do more harm than good.  For example, see my 12-Jul-2021 comment in ex-jedi's Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying about the overly-aggressive registry cleaner included with the Tune Performance (now called Boost Performance in SupportAssist v4.x) optimization scan.
