Dell Update vs Dell Update for Windows Universal

Dell G7 17 7790

Dell G7 17 7790

What is the difference between these two apps?  Do I really need both on my pc?

They both are the same utility app with the same functions.  You will need to install only one.  Use Dell Update for Windows for your Windows base machine.

Hi @AdrianeS :

Dell Update v4.x is an "old-style" classic Win32 application that is no longer supported.  The "Supported Operating Systems" section of the release notes <here> for Dell Update v4.6.0 (released Aug 2022) show that this application is compatible with Win 8.1 and higher, and I believe you would still be able to use this application if you had an older Dell machine with a Win 8.1 OS, but it would not receive any further feature or security updates.

The Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x app is a "new-style" UWP (Universal Windows Platform) app that is still supported, and as Chino de Oro suggested, this is the app you should install if you have a Win 10 or higher OS. If you read the "Important Information" section of the release notes <here> for the current Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.2.0 (released Jan 2024) it says "Dell Update Classic interface is not supported from version 4.8 and later. If you have Dell Update Classic, Dell Update version 4.8 UWP is installed."

Note that Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.2.0 (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_GT6WW_WIN_5.2.0_A00.EXE, released 31-Jan-2024) is the UWP app currently offered on the support page for your Dell G7 17 7790 at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/g-series-17-7790-laptop/drivers, but the support page for other Dell computer models may recommend a slightly different edition of the Dell Update UWP app (e.g., Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal v5.x).

@lmacri Why are both applications still being offered to me, if the Dell Command Update Application is no longer supported? Or did you mean that version 4.x is no longer supported? Both applications offered to me are version 5.4.0. In the details, both are listed as "File Format: Update Package for MS Windows 32-Bit" -- so both are 32-bit? Why is Dell maintaining both versions in parallell? What are the differences? Why offer both (I'm viewing downloads specifically for my computer, service tag specified)?

Hi @baris01 :

What is your Dell computer model and Windows OS?  My Inspiron 5584 is not compatible with Dell | Command Update (DCU), but according to ajscott's 24-Feb-2023 Dell Command Update 4.8 Non-Universal App Version Available in the reddit forum Dell eventually decided to continue supporting the "old-style" standalone Dell Command | Update application for certain Dell computer models after complaints from users with higher-end computer models.

My 13-Apr-2024 reply <above> to AdrianeS was specific to their Dell G7 17 7790 and Dell Update (DU).  If you browse to their support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/g-series-17-7790-laptop/drivers it lists the "new-style" Dell Update Windows Universal Application v5.4.0 (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_HG1TN_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE, rel. 31-Jul-2024) and "old-style" Dell Update Application v4.6.0 (Dell-Update-Application_RYXN2_WIN_4.6.0_A00_02.EXE, rel. 24-Aug-2022).  I'm guessing the classic "old-style" standalone Dell Update v4.6.0 is only intended for Dell G7 17 7790 machines that have an older Win 8.1 OS and don't meet the minimum system requirements for the newer UWP edition.

Many Dell computer models running Win 10 or Win 11 OS had their "old-style" standalone Dell Update v4.x application automatically switched to the "new-style" Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.x UWP app back in late 2022. If you expand the "Important Information" section of the old release notes at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=0991n&oscode=wt64a for Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.7.1 released on 24-Nov-2022, for example, it says "Dell Update Classic interface is not supported from version 4.7 and later. Dell Update version 4.7 UWP is installed if you have Dell Update Classic".  See my 29-Mar-2023 post in sewing1243's Dell Update Windows Universal Application 4.8 Update for further details about this forced switch to the "new-style" Dell Update UWP app on many computer models.

Hi baris01:

IMPORTANT: Dell is ending support for Dell Update apps on 31-Dec-2024, and as AFAIK this includes Dell Command | Update (both the "standard" and Universal Windows editions).  See my 09-May-2024 topic Support for Dell Update / Alienware Update Ending December 2024 for more information.

Go to your Latitude 5450 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/latitude-14-5450-laptop/drivers, click the "This Device" tab and enter your unique Service Tag to see a filtered list of Dell software and drivers that match your system components.  If you are still offered both Dell | Command Update v5.4.0 (the "standard" application) and Dell | Command Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 [the Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app] as shown in your 20-Nov-2024 post <above> then I assume you have a choice of installing either app.

I can't tell you if those two v5.4.0 apps offer slightly different features (the support page for my my Inspiron 15 5584 / Win 10 laptop only offers the UWP edition for the current v5.4.0) but the Microsoft Learn article What's a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) App? lists some of the design features that are particular to UWP / Microsoft Store apps (e.g., Win 10 and higher only, multi-platform for different OSs, etc.).  That support article states that "Although still supported, UWP is not under active development", and most users posting in the Feb 2023 reddit topic Dell Command Update 4.8 Non-Universal App Version Available seemed to prefer the "standard" (non-UWP) application, so I would personally suggest you try the "standard" Dell | Command Update v5.4.0 app (Dell-Command-Update-Application_6VFWW_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE, rel. 31-Jul-2024) if it matches your Service Tag.

Whichever edition you choose, download the .exe installer and save to your desktop, close your browser, and then right-click and choose "Run as Administrator".

NOTE: If you already have the current SupportAssist v4.0.3 installed please read employee DELL-Chris M 10-Jun-2024 SupportAssist, "Hardware scan fails", "We ran into a problem" about a known issue that can occur if both SupportAssist v4.0.3 and Dell Command Update (or Dell Command Update for Windows Universal) are installed on the same machine.  According to employee DELL-Nat M's 19-Nov-2024 post in jmarsh09's Update Not Working On Support Assist a new version of SupportAssist v4.x will be released soon (the new Nov 2024 release notes have already been posted at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs and state the upcoming SupportAssist version will require Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime v8.0.x.) which will hopefully fix this problem.
