Dell Update for Windows Universal-do I need it?

I'm running and XPS 8950 desktop. This AM Dell Driver and Download screen showed a recommended App Dell Update for Windows Universal. I've never seen this before and as far as I know never installed it. So I'm not sure why it showed up. I don't use Support Assist (SA) because it slowed my system way down. I manually check for updates in the Dell driver and download screen and, of course, W11 checks for drivers as well. I also do not have Dell Update installed. So, do I need this app? I look forward to anyone's comments. Thanks

The Dell Update Windows Universal application, part of Dell Command | Update, is a tool that simplifies the process of updating BIOS, firmware, drivers, and applications for Dell client hardware, ensuring your system stays current and stable. It is your option to install it on the system.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
What it does:
Dell Command | Update (DCU) is a utility that automates the process of updating drivers, BIOS, and firmware on your Dell computer. It checks for available updates and allows you to install them with minimal effort.
Why use it:
DCU helps keep your system up-to-date with the latest software and drivers, improving functionality, reliability, and stability. It also addresses security vulnerabilities.
How it works:
DCU scans your system for available updates and then presents them to you for installation. You can choose to install updates individually or in batches.
Compatibility:
DCU is compatible with Windows 10 Anniversary Update (Redstone 1) or later, and Windows 11 operating systems.
Key Features:
Automated Updates: DCU automatically checks for and installs updates, saving you time and effort.
Driver Updates: It ensures your device drivers are up to date, which can improve performance and stability.
BIOS and Firmware Updates: DCU can update your BIOS and firmware, which are essential for system stability and functionality.
Security Updates: DCU helps address security vulnerabilities by installing the latest security patches.
How to use it:
Download and install the Dell Command | Update application.
Open the application and select the updates you want to install.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update process.

@DELL-Jesse L

Thank you for your reply. I would point out that I'm a single home user and have never installed DCU as I'm not part of any Dell client system. I use to use Support Assist (SA) until i uninstalled due to problems with it. I've been manually checking and downloading drivers etc from the Dell driver and download web site. and, of course, W11 does check for updates as well. So, if this app is related to DCU, and I don't have DCU, why do I need it?

@arejfour You do not need the program. It just helps makes updating all drivers without manually updating them.

Hi  @DELL-Jesse L :

Do you know why the installer for latest Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.5.0 (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_7CJ1W_WIN64_5.5.0_A00.EXE, released 01-Apr-2025)  also installed the Dell Core Services application and Dell TechHub service on my system?  See the images in my 02-Apr-2025 post in my topic Support for Dell Update / Alienware Update Ending December 2024.

I wiped SupportAssist off my system two years ago and don't understand why I would now need Dell TechHub service when Dell Update only checks for available updates and cannot run hardware diagnostic scans.  I know that past versions of Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x have always required the shared Dell Client Management Service but it's not clear why either the Dell Core Services application and/or Dell TechHub service would now be required for Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.5.0.

Hi @DELL-Jesse L :

I also just discovered 7 new Dell-related processes starting automatically at bootup that I'm sure weren't listed in Task Manager when I was using earlier versions of Dell Update for Windows Universal v5x.  See the image in my 03-Apr-2025 post in my topic  Support for Dell Update / Alienware Update Ending December 2024.
